In some countries you have to pay extra reservation fees for some type of trains despite your Interrail or Eurail pass. The typical countries are: France, Spain and Italy. You can often avoid these extra costs and use other (usually slower) connections.
As an example, I took the route from Rome to Venice. Of course you can insert some stops here, but we are talking about the direct connection. There are three options, three journey times and three extra reservation fees.

Once upon a time, a key part of the preparation of any trip to Europe was the purchase of a Eurail Pass. These days, the proliferation of super discount new orleans plantation tours airlines throughout Europe has made it so some trips are now cheaper if you fly than if you take the train. Even when Eurail passes were more highly recommended, getting an Italy-only rail pass was still one of those things where you had to look closely at how much individual tickets would cost to see if it was worth it. Today, with more transportation options than ever, it s even more important to do the math.
In this article, we re going to look at when to get an Italy RailPass . Now, given the above paragraph you might be thinking it s never a good idea anymore new orleans plantation tours but that s definitely not the case. I used a railpass earlier this year and it saved me quite a bit of cash over buying individual tickets in-country, but a colleague and I had done a bunch of calculations before I left to make sure I d be saving new orleans plantation tours money. If you re as mathematically-challenged as I am (hence why I needed a colleague s help in the calculating), or if you just need to be pointed in the right direction, then I hope this article will help.
And it s also worth noting that even if you decide it makes sense to get a railpass or you just want to take advantage of the conveniences that come with having one but you re not sure which one suits your trip best, there s a person in my office at BootsnAll who can answer all your Eurail questions . Dave is our go-to guy for Eurail new orleans plantation tours questions, and he can help you figure out which is the best pass for you. He s a toll-free phone call away (if you re in the US) at 1-866-549-7614, and he s often available on the Skype link from our Eurail page .
You ll hear travelers say that Italy s trains are fairly cheap, so it often doesn t make sense to buy a railpass for just Italy. This was certainly true in the days when Italy was still using the lira , and it can still be true today but it depends on where you re going on Italy and on what kinds of trains.
Italy is criss-crossed new orleans plantation tours by a network of rail lines, and most of the popular routes (especially those between bigger cities) are covered by high-speed trains. The high-speed trains in Italy such as the EuroStar, InterCity, new orleans plantation tours or the new Alta Velocita can be quite a bit more expensive than a slow train on the same route. The differences between the fast and slow trains are probably obvious. The slower trains, stopping much more frequently along the way, take much longer to get from A to B. The high-speed trains stop less frequently, so get to each stop more quickly. The high-speed trains are also typically newer trains, and so can be a little more comfortable new orleans plantation tours (even in 2nd class).
With the high-speed trains, you ll almost always be required to buy a reservation in addition to your ticket, which makes the cost of those fast trains even higher. The cost of the reservation, like the cost of the ticket, will vary based on the exact kind of train you re on, which class car you want to be in, and the cities you re traveling to/from. As a reference point, on a recent trip I did from Milan to Rome on the EuroStar, I paid 20 for the reservation alone in a 2nd class car.
With some slower trains you may not even be able to a reservation, as they may be entirely first come, first served when it comes to seating, or a reservation may be optional and you ll take your chances of standing if the train is really full and you re reservation-less.
Keep in mind that if you are carrying an Italy Rail Pass, that is the equivalent of a ticket. In other words if a reservation is required for a particular train and you ve already got a rail pass, all you need to purchase is a reservation (bring your rail pass to the ticket counter with you when you re buying your reservation so they know you re all set). If you don t have a rail pass, you ll need to buy a ticket and a reservation, which can sometimes get printed on the same piece of paper.
You can get an Italy rail pass that s tailored to just the number of days you ll be using, as there are denominations between 3-10 days (to be used within a 2-month period). The cost-per-day of the pass goes down the more days you ll use, but it still costs enough that you probably don t want to buy a pass with a few extra days on it just in case you end up using them.
So before you can figure out whether a pass is a good idea for you, you ll need to know two things how many train travel days your trip includes, and the rough cost of a train ticket on the various journeys you ll be taking.
With regard to the number of train travel days in your trip, be sure to count both any day-trips you ll be taking new orleans plantation tours as well as any transfers from city to city but remember that with a rail pass a day-trip will only use one of the days on your pass. And as for getting an estimate of the costs for train tickets purchased in Italy, you can get good results with the Trenitalia new orleans plantation tours website (which has a pretty new orleans plantation tours good English version).
You can determine the cost-per-day of each pass just by dividing the number of days it s good for into the cost of the pass (you can find the current costs of an Italy Rail Pass here ). For instance, a 3-day 1st class adult ticket costs (at the moment) $217, which means the cost-per-day new orleans plantation tours of that pass is a little more than $72. If you look at the cost of train tickets for the trips you re planning to take and all of them are less than $72 per day, then it s easy to see how buying individual tickets is cheaper than buying a rail pass in that case.
On the other hand, a 5-day 2nd class adult ticket (at the moment) new orleans plantation tours is $219, making the cost-per-day of that pass just under $44. If you re between the ages of 12-25 and can get a youth pass, a 5-day pass is only $179 (cost-per-day of just under $35), and a 5-day 2nd class pass for a child between the ages of 4-11 is $111 (cost-per-day of just over $22). There are lots of train trips on high-speed trains for which any of these passes would save you money.
It s also worth noting that if you re traveling as a family or a group of 2-5 people and you ll always be together on the trains, there s something called new orleans plantation tours an Italy Saver pass that makes the trips (and the cost-per-day) even cheaper.
But even besides the cost, if your itinerary in Italy is completely unscheduled and you have absolutely no idea how many train trips you ll be taking let alone how many of them are going to be on high-speed trains then you re not really the ideal Italy rail pass candidate. The broader Eurail Pass is practically designed for itinerary-less travelers, and if your trip includes more than just Italy then it s definitely worth looking at getting a Eurail pass before you go.
If you re just going to Italy, however, it s not so simple. Because you ll need a reservation new orleans plantation tours for high-speed trains (where the rail pass can really save you money), the convenience factor of already having your ticket and just hopping on the next train leaving the station isn t there you ll still need to visit a ticket new orleans plantation tours counter to buy a reservation (or risk a huge fine if you re caught on the train without one). And although you could take advantage of just hopping onto just about any slow train without a reservation, a ticket for that train might very well cost less than the cost-per-day of your rail pass.
Your rail pass option is InterRail , which offers essentially the same perks as a Eurail Pass. Depending on your itinerary, you can buy a Global InterRail Pass (good for 30 European countries, including Italy), or a simple Italy InterRail Pass (good for Italy only).
The cost of the InterRail Passes varies depending on how many travel days per month you need, how old the traveler is, and whether you want to travel in 1st or 2nd class. A Youth Pass (age 25 or younger) for Italy only that has 6 travel days to be used in one month is 125. An Adult Pass for Italy only in 2nd class and with those same 6 travel days in a month is 195. Italy InterRail passes are available in increments of 3, 4, 6, or 8 travel days per month.
Global Passes are more costly, as they allow you to enter more countries, and they are available in more increments 5 travel days within 10 days, 10 travel days within 22 days, 15 consecutive days, 22 consecutive days, or 1 consecutive month. A Global Youth Pass for 10 travel days within 22 days is 249, and an Adult Global Pass in 2nd class for those same 10 travel days within 22 days is 369.
To find out whether it s cheaper to buy an InterRail Pass or buy Italy train tickets along the way, you ll do the same math outlined above figure out the cost of the train trips you want to take, and see if they add up to less than the cost of an InterRail Pass that would cover those journeys.
I know, I know All of this math isn t exactly fun. But it s the best way to find out for sure whether an Italy rail pass will save you money or not. If, however, you want the short-hand version, here it is.
Again, the math outlined above isn t hard but I understand how your eyes might be glazing over at the thought of it. Mine did. So if you really don t want to do any of the math, then here s the bottom line.
Fortunately, I m a math-geek anyway so I fired up my Excel and worked out the niggly details just as you suggest myself. For families, the Saver fares are great and there are sometimes additional family new orleans plantation tours discounts new orleans plantation tours which you can take advantage of too we only found out about these when we got there but they applied to all our train trips.
It sounds like you didn t really need this article, Michelle, self-confessed math-geek! I needed the assistance of my math-geek colleague to help me with all of this so even though I know lots of people out there could figure it out on their own, the fact that I couldn t meant that at least a few others might find the information helpful.
Most rail passes are for non-consecutive days 3 days anytime during the time when the pass is valid but there are a few that are for consecutive days. If yo

I would go for the first short break to Venice - better than Milan for sure as a first visit, as another Fodorite commented. If you have some free time you can visit Verona from there. Fly in or out of Venice Marco Polo Airport, or Venice Treviso Airport (Ryan Air lands there as well, or alternatively Verona) Regarding your shopping for suits - there are plenty of high-end shops in Rome, or to suit your budget - so buy your suits on your second trip.
I would go to Rome for the other break. You can do a day trip from there if you feel you need to get out of this city for a day - even as far as Florence (which is doubtful as you are only going for a few days.
Is it because of business reasons that you have to do two trips in two weeks to the same country? - or do you simply have these slots available for two short breaks and intend to take maybe low cost airlines? - or is it your intention to choose one of the two breaks you have available. If it is the latter, I would go for Rome, since you have more days at your disposal, there is plenty to do there, car rentals phoenix az and you would fit in the shopping spree for suits.
If you want suits you will generally find off-the-peg "Brand" suits in Milan, so rubbish like Armani etc (just near the Opera). If however you go down the side streets near the main railway station you could find a tailors who would make you a proper suit but not over a weekend (they take a week or two once you get out of Hong Kong etc).
Do Venice for the first trip, Rome for the second. If, in either place, you feel the need to get out and see something different (I'd wager you won't), from Venice head to Verona or Vicenza or Padua; from Rome head to Ostia Antica or down the coast.
The reason I ask for advise again is because the city may be changed between the suggested since i have more days and you guys may just recommend to travel once to Italy from the 7th onwards and not travel back and forth as originally planned.
I think it would be very nice to fly to northern Italy for this weekend. The weather will be very nice. If you stay in Verona, then you can visit both Venice and Milan or Lago di Garda if you feel like it. There are many airports you can use.
Maybe to avoid the hassle of travelling twice to Italy in such a short time, you might take a flight to Venice, spend 3 nights there, then train (or take low cost internal flight, check out Easyjet or Ryan air - they both do internal flights in Italy) car rentals phoenix az to either Florence car rentals phoenix az or Rome and spend the last 3 nights in the city you chose.
Alternatively, if you do not mind travelling for a holiday in such a short time span, go for the first weekend break to Venice, and during your second holiday do either Rome and Florence (or anywhere else in Tuscany or Umbria) or stay for the six nights in Rome.
It always depends on whether you like to include countryside car rentals phoenix az or prefer cities, whether you are more into culture and history and whether you would prefer to visit a city thoroughly, or prefer visiting multiple cities. It is all a matter of personal choice.
just travelled by train in italy, it would have been great had the train not broken down on us several times, once leaving us stranded at night in this town which had no open hotel rooms...we had to sleep outside the train station that night. i recommend if you are going to use the trains, to travel in the morning/afternoon, in case the train breaks you will have time to find another route.

One train that railpass holders should avoid is the Thalys train between Paris and Brussels and Amst

I want to go to europe this summer with a friend and we are considering getting an EURAIL pass but a lot of people seem to advise renaissance hotel austin texas against this, they say that it costs money to make reservations and you need to book way in advance. We plan on going in may which we heard is just before peak season, We also would like to know if it is better to book hostels/hotels far in advance or just wing it and book when we get to the city. We want to visit Madrid Barcelona Paris Verona Florence Rome and then fly from Rome to London renaissance hotel austin texas and London home. What is the best way to go about this?
Lots of country trains do not charge a seat reservation fee, some do so it depends on which countries - many you can still hop on any train anytime and such fully flexible tickets can cost a ton of money. Check out these fab IMO sites for lots about European trains and passes - www.budgeteuropetravel.com ; www.ricksteves.com and www.seat61.com - the latter renaissance hotel austin texas is a font of great info on online discounted tickets which however are sold in limited numbers and must be booked weeks in advance and typically cannot be changed nor refunded - so whether flexbility is desired or not is a key to which is better.
not true and typical of the misinformation about railpasses that it typical of Fodor's where there is an automatic bias against railpasses with typical renaissance hotel austin texas comments 'they are always a waste of money' and misinformation like this - you say something enough people will believe it and repeat it as fact.
Fact is in UK, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Norway and Eastern Europe renaissance hotel austin texas on nearly all trains you can still hop on with a railpasses on any train you want - complete flexibility.
Now in France, Spain and Italy you do have to have mandated seat reservations before boarding and except in the case of some French TGV lines which have a limit on the number of passholder seats they will sell per train - in Italy and Spain you can always IME get needed seat reservations as you go along - only on a few TGV lines in France should you book way in advance.
Unfortunately you are going to the three countries that mandate seat reservations so you have to figure in the cost of trains but again in Italy or Spain you do not have to book seats with a pass weeks in advance - IME you can usually renaissance hotel austin texas book the same day as there are so so many trains and if you have a first class pass it is all the more easier as first class often has empty seats.
And most French TGVs charge but 3 euros a seat for domestic travel - international ones can charge more - like those going to Switzerland from Paris - In Italy the fee is 10 euros per train and in Spain around 10-12 I think.
And if you are over 25 then you Eurail Pass usually is first class and there are immense benefits IME for the average traveler in first class - especially those hauling around lots of luggage - more empty seats - always empty seats IME - more room to stow luggage - seats are bigger, etc. So compare the pass price to the cost of first class tickets IMO.
Yes the Fodor's mantra is that discounted online tickets which do have to be bought weeks or months in advance to guarantee their availability are the way to go - this advice is often given IME without even asking renaissance hotel austin texas how many trains you will take or where - if you take many trains renaissance hotel austin texas then a pass cold well be cheaper than a collection of non-changeable non-refundable tickets that must be booked weeks in advance. Now I am not saying that many folks naively may buy a railpass for just a few trips and they should not - do your research - do not believe the info you got from others like the one I quote here at the top of my post.
One problem with online discounted tickets is that for international journeys they may not always exist and also since these are in very limited numbers often you must book when they come on the system - typically 2-3 months in advance. But if your trip will take say three weeks you may find you can book the first trips two months early but not the later trips until they come on the system and then you never know if they will be available - they are not available renaissance hotel austin texas on all trains - and then you may have booked some discounted tickets but found subsequent train trips could only have full fare and that can be very costly - point is you cannot book all your fares at once due to time limits of when they come on the system so it is hard to know all at once how much you will spend.
One train that railpass holders should avoid is the Thalys train between Paris and Brussels and Amsterdam and Cologne - this is the only train I know - regular renaissance hotel austin texas train that imposes an absurd seat reservation fee on pass holders - about $35 in 2nd class and much more in first class - but you do not have to take this train usually unless renaissance hotel austin texas you are going between Paris and Brussels- from Brussels on there are other trains you can just hop on - and since many folks go to Bruges from Paris then you can take a French TGV to Lille and regular train to Bruges in about the same time as going via Brussels and with a pass only pas a 3 euro seat reservation fee.
You should also you ask your questions on the message board forums for Lonely Planet website and Bootsnall. Those boards have a lot of people your age who have already done just what you are thinking about doing, and many of them traveled very spontaeously. You just need to be careful that sometimes people won't tell you about all the mistakes they made -- but that's true of any message board!
so how do i book online tickets for travel in Italy and france, my friend and i are considering cutting out spain and going from North starting in amsterdam then going down to italy and back up to Paris then taking the eurostar into london then flying home with occasional stops in a few cities along the way
What Man in Seat 61 continually misses is that some folks want flexibility to chose what trains they want to take when there and if so a very few full fare trips may warrant a railpass. renaissance hotel austin texas Man - please try to wrap your head around that discount tickets that must be booked weeks or months in advance and which are usually renaissance hotel austin texas not changeable may not be the panacea for everyone as you routinely say - some folks actually want flexibility to hop trains as they go. I'm sorry you cannot appreciate that fact.
One problem with a Eurail Pass for that next summer would be that normally I would recommend to consider a Eurail Select Pass, valid in Spain, France and Italy but as of Jan 1. 2013 I understand that France is withdrawing from the Eurail Select Pass option - and a Global Eurailpass renaissance hotel austin texas costs a lot more but would still cover France - just Eurail Select will no longer be valid in France I understand.

View at Imperial Palace Park, Tokyo. After an action packed first 3 days in the mega city that is Tokyo, we had another 3 to go. On Day 4 we were up early as we wanted to visit the World Heritage town of Nikko, 2 hours/135km away by train. We left the hostel at 7.30am to get the 8.10am train from Asakusa one way car rentals washingtonstate station nearby, and after purchasing the World Heritage Nikko day passes for 3600 Yen (about £31) each we were set to go. It's worth getting this pass if you don't have the Japan Rail (JR) pass as the train journey to Nikko alone is 2640Yen return one way car rentals washingtonstate PP (around £21) and the temples are between 500-1000 Yen to enter each (around £4-£8) and there are atleast 5 of them. It also includes the return bus from the train station in Nikko to the temples which saves a few more ££. If you do have the JR pass, you can buy a combo ticket for all the temples for 1000 Yen in Nikko.
Meiji Shrine Gate - Harajuku dazzling shrine Tosho-gu, which is World Heritage listed and features famous carvings one way car rentals washingtonstate of the three ''Hear no evil, See no evil, Speak no evil'' monkeys, which represent the three major principles of Tendai Buddism (we thought it was just the name of a funny film until we got here!) . The decorative Rinno-ji and Futarasan-jinja temples are also a major attraction of Nikko, all of which are surrounded by beautiful forests and mountains.
The town itself is nice enough and small with a few shops and restaurants, but the real beauty lies within the temple area at the top, about 10-15 minutes away. The temples/shrines were built back in 1617 and, aside from the hordes of Japanese school kids on day trips, the setting was very peaceful and remote with stunning scenery. We wandered around the temples one way car rentals washingtonstate and shrines for a good 3 hours taking it all in, finding corners of tranquillity here and there, and spoke to some Japanese school kids to help them with their English, before making our way back to the train station for a bit of lunch. Today we had Ramen noodles for the first time since arriving to Tokyo (like a noodle soup
Good times in Tokyo with big bits of meat in them) and they were delicious! We then jumped on a train back to Tokyo and slept the whole way before arriving back in Asakusa at 5pm after another brilliant day out.
When we got back to the hostel Scott wanted to visit the local Onsen (public bath) again so he did that while Vic washed her hair for the first time since arriving 4 days ago (getting into traveller mode already!) and that is when she found out that her hair straighteners one way car rentals washingtonstate do not work in Japan as the voltage is different! Cue a ten minute devastation episode and a 20 minute fight with the hairdryer before giving up and realising that she would have to have rubbish hair for the next 2 weeks!
That evening we were pretty tired after our early start so decided on a quiet local dinner near the hostel of Tempura (battered/fried) prawns and vegetables, as well as a shared chicken Katsu curry and rice (our favourite Japanese dish so far) before doing some computer stuff, having shots of Japanese Whiskey with some other people from the hostel one way car rentals washingtonstate (as you do) and calling it a
On day five we had to leave the hostel we had come to love (as we had only booked for the first 4 days and they were full) and were faced with the dilemma of staying in another one in the same area, saving money and a bit of time but not being able to go out properly one way car rentals washingtonstate that night (as the bars/clubs are on the other side of town) and still being in bunk beds in a shared dorm room, or moving to a proper hotel on the other side of town, costing more but enabling us to be close to the nightlife for our last night in Tokyo, and also share a bed for the first time since arriving…the latter option won and we quickly booked a hotel online in the Shinjuku area of the city, excited about a night out in Tokyo and also having a bed and a room to ourselves!
We checked out and loaded with our backpacks, made the journey on the subway to the new hotel, which included changing trains three times, not easy in 25 degree heat, with 15kg each on our backs and another
Tosho-Gu 7kg each on our fronts (we have sooooo overpacked!), all the while being stared at as if we were crazy by the local people! We got to the new hotel in about 40 minutes and it seemed nice, we left our bags with reception and then rushed back to the metro to central Tokyo, as we wanted to join a free walking tour of the Imperial Palace & it s gardens which we had heard about that was starting at 1pm – it was now 12.40 and a good 20 minutes by metro to Central Tokyo – as usual we were in a rush! But we made it just in time and joined the walking tour, which was given by Japanese volunteers one way car rentals washingtonstate who are practicing one way car rentals washingtonstate to be tour guides.
The tour, which a few other people from our hostel were also doing, took us around the well maintained outer gardens of the Imperial Palace, which is home to the Emperor and his family, and occupies a vast chunk of the Central Tokyo area. You can only enter the inner gardens of the Palace on a pre-arranged official tour twice a day which needs to be booked a few
Ramen time! weeks in advance, apart from on the Emperor's Birthday (23 rd December) and January 2 nd , when it is open to the public. Back in the 17 th Century the Imperial Palace was the location of Edo Castle, which burned down in the early 1900's, but the gardens are still a good way to spend a few hours learning about some history. Again, old mixes with new here, and the historical gardens and Palace are against a backdrop of modern one way car rentals washingtonstate skyscrapers and buildings which make up the financial area of Tokyo. During the tour Scott got to dress like a Ninja (!) for 5 minutes and Vic had a practice with some chopstix, just so the guides felt we knew all aspects of Japanese life.
After the walking tour we made our way back to the metro to go to the stylish shopping area of Ginza. One thing to note about big metro stations here is that the walk from when you enter the station until you get to the actual platform below can be really long and this one took us over 15 minutes and was about 1km! When changing lines within a station you can walk for quite
Views from the top of Govt. Bldg a while as well. Anyway, a couple of stops later we arrived in Ginza, not to shop as the area is known for, with designer and boutique stores lining the wide streets, but to see the Sony building/centre. We thought it was going to be full of strange gadgets but aside from some musical stairs, which played different notes when you walked up them, creating one way car rentals washingtonstate a tune, it was just full of normal Sony TV's, phones, music systems and such like. The one aside from all this technology was a large room in which there was a Michael Jackson tribute going on, with his music playing and photos of him everywhere and his videos playing on a large screen, to celebrate 25 years of his 'Bad' album…we were a bit unsure why this was such a big thing in Tokyo, but the Japanese one way car rentals washingtonstate people were loving it!
It was around 4pm by this time so we decided to move on back to the Shinjuku area of the city to go up to the Observatory Tower, which sits on top of Tokyo Government Building, as we had heard it offered some amazing panoramic views of the city. Shinjuku
Harajuku CosPlay Fashion station one way car rentals washingtonstate is huge, and if you come out of the wrong exit you could walk for an extra half an hour just to get to the correct place, so we couldn't find the Government building at first and surprisingly none of the local people knew where it was either…another observation here, is that even if you are trying to go somewhere 5 minutes away from where you are, most people won't know what you are talking about, even when showing one way car rentals washingtonstate them on a map! We eventually found the building and took the lift up to the 45 th floor where we were greeted by clear views over the city which looked even more widespread from a height. On a really clear day you can see Mt Fuji apparently but typically it was cloudy in that direction. We hadn't eaten all day and fatigue had caught up with us by this point, so we didn't stay very long and headed one way car rentals washingtonstate back down to make our way to our hotel. As we left the building, which is surrounded by other large corporate buildings, we were surprised to see a man (we think he was homeless) sitting on a chair by the side of
Arty shot at Nikko the road, with about 10 ginger and white cats in boxes and on leads, one way car rentals washingtonstate which seemed to be his…imagine walking out of Liverpool Street station and seeing a site like this…just another one way car rentals washingtonstate mental Tokyo experience!
We made our way back to Shinjuku one way car rentals washingtonstate station, one way car rentals washingtonstate where we exchanged our JR pass receipt (which we had bought at home) for the JR 7 day pass to start on Sunday, one way car rentals washingtonstate and started to walk back towards our hotel. We got a bit lost but came across a Katsu curry shop (with vending machine), and as we were starving now and we love this food we went in and ordered like pro's before wolfing down the best Katsu curry & rice we have had so far. We didn't know exactly the way to our hotel so jumped on the metro 2 stops and checked in to our small but modern room, where we had a much deserved rest and got ready for our last night in Tokyo.
Forest tree tops from below we went out around 9pm. We headed to an area of Shinjuku called Golden Gai where there were lots and lots of tiny bars in narrow streets which we thought one way car rentals washingtonstate would be busy, especially with it being a Saturday night, but it was quiet so we carried on walking into central Shinjuku to find a bar or two. After a while of looking around we didn't one way car rentals washingtonstate see anywhere we fancied so jumped one way car rentals washingtonstate on the metro to Shibuya where the nightlife is supposed to be really good. Again we wandered around looking for bars but they must be really hidden as we literally one way car rentals washingtonstate couldn't find any…probab

In the course of its colorful history, ownership of San Antonio has been claimed by six different governments. Thus, the city is said to have been under 6 flags. Rule by France, Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate States of America and the United States of America has shaped San Antonio, as each culture has left its mark. Art, architecture, and history intermingle norwegian cruises everywhere in this robust norwegian cruises southwestern city. With nearly 300 years as a cultural crossroads the city has a colorful past and takes every opportunity to celebrate it! San Antonio is well known as a party going city. Fiestas and festivals abound.
norwegian cruises Downtown San Antonio retains an Old World feeling as narrow streets, plazas, and Spanish architecture blend with modern skyscrapers. The city has always been a crossroads and a meeting place. Sounds and flavors of Native America, Old Mexico, Germany, the Wild West, African-America and the Deep South mingle and merge. Close to seven million visitors delight norwegian cruises each year in the discovery of San Antonio s charms.
San Antonio lies on the edge of the Texas Hill country, considered by many to be the most scenic area in the state. Its rolling terrain is dotted norwegian cruises with dark green cedars and oaks gradually giving norwegian cruises way to prickly pear and cactus. Clear rivers run beneath limestone cliffs and canyons, and spectacular views span the endless blue of the Texas sky.
Much of San Antonio can be explored on foot, although some of its attractions will require transportation. For the Hill Country, a car is a must. You can visit several towns in a day, enjoying some of the landscapes in between as you drive.
Are you looking for excellent traditional jazz or a sing-along at an Irish pub or piano bar? What about Hard Rock Cafe or Planet Hollywood on the River Walk, or Sunset Station? San Antonio offers a wide range of entertainment options both during the day and after the sun goes down. When the stars come out over the South Texas plains, it s time to head to the nightclubs and dance halls, two-stepping to a country-western band, getting down to a rocking beat or swaying in a slower Tejano style.
San Antonio is a Mecca for history buffs. Native Americans first lived along the San Antonio River, calling the area Yanaguana, which means refreshing waters. In 1718, at an Cohuiltecan Indian village in a pleasant wooded area of spring-fed streams at the southern edge of the Texas Hill Country, Spanish Friar Antonio Olivares established norwegian cruises Mission San Antonio de Valero (later called the Alamo). A customary accompanying presidio (fort), was added in the same year.
This site became permanently etched in the annals of history in 1836 as The Alamo , where 189 volunteer freedom norwegian cruises fighters died after holding the old mission against some 4,000 Mexican troops for 13 days. The cry Remember the Alamo became the rallying point of the Texan revolution against Mexico. Located in the heart of downtown, today The Alamo still stands, dwarfed by twentieth century buildings, as a shrine norwegian cruises and museum.
There was a time when flooding occurred on a regular basis with devastating results. After the 1921 flood, there was much deliberation as to how to improve the situation in the future. The fortunate decision was made to construct a bypass channel and two dams to control flooding. The river area was cleaned up, and a footpath and parks were created bordering the river. The result is that the river has become one of the city s premiere assets, the Riverwalk, which symbolizes beauty and romance instead of destruction.
The Riverwalk is a 2.5 mile (21 block) tree lined promenade where luxury hotels, specialty shops, norwegian cruises and European-style cafés line the banks of the San Antonio norwegian cruises River . Below street norwegian cruises level, the walk is reached by steps from various spots along the main roads and crossed norwegian cruises by humpbacked stone bridges. Cobbled paths, lined with tropical norwegian cruises plants and shaded by pine, cypress, norwegian cruises oak and willow, wind beside the jade-green water, with much of the city s eating and entertainment concentrated along the way. You can catch a river taxi at various points, or just stroll along and watch.
Dining options in San Antonio run the gamut from fine French cuisine to Chinese to Soul food and Cajun, but the one not to miss is Tex-Mex. Tex-Mex is a passion with local residents of all ethnic backgrounds, and numerous restaurants are open 24 hours.
San Antonio also offers norwegian cruises a wide variety of spectator sports the San Antonio Spurs, San Antonio Dragons of the International Hockey League and the San Antonio Missions minor league baseball team all attract crowds.
The downtown All Around Playground at HemisFair Park and the newly renovated Milam Park across from Market Square provide excellent stops for children to burn off excess energy. The Tower of the Americas offers a spectacular view of San Antonio from 579 feet above the ground.
norwegian cruises Among the museums in HemisFair Park is the Institute of Texan Cultures. Articles representative of the social histories of thirty diverse Texan cultures are displayed with especially pertinent African-American and Native American sections. There is even an intriguing corner devoted to short lived attempts to introduce the camel to West Texas as a beast of burden.
Two blocks west on the Plaza de Armas, stands the beautifully simple, norwegian cruises whitewashed Spanish Governors Palace which was home to Spanish norwegian cruises officials during the mission era. Just one story tall, it doesn t fit the usual image of a palace, but its flagstone floors, low doorways, beamed ceilings, religious icons and ornate wooden carvings elevate it to that category. It provides an illuminating glimpse of the lifestyles of the civil and religious authorities in this remote outpost. It is easy to imagine them strolling through the cobbled courtyard, with its fountain, mosaic norwegian cruises floor and lush palms.
The possibilities for entertainment, cultural offerings, spirited festivals, interesting shopping and exploration of natural wonders are all awaiting the visitor to San Antonio. Whatever your vacation dreams, they will be fulfilled in a visit to this welcoming, exciting, family friendly city.
The site that was to become San Antonio was originally a Coahuiltecan Indian village inhabited by a peaceful norwegian cruises nomadic tribe. Spanish clergy seeking to extend their country s efforts to colonize North America, taught these original inhabitants farming and in the process set up an outstanding norwegian cruises system of irrigation that is still in use in the San Antonio area.
A band of Spanish explorers and missionaries came upon the river in 1691, and because it was the feast day of St. Anthony, they named the river San Antonio. A permanent settlement was made in 1718 when the city was officially founded by Friar Antonio de San Buenaventura Olivares, who established the first mission and named it after his patron saint, Saint Anthony. Later that same year, Don Martin de Alarcon , Captain General and Governor of the Province of Texas constructed a military fort (presidio) in order to protect the fledgling settlement.
To populate the colony, the Spanish sent several dozen people from the Canary Islands. Four missions built ,which flourished until 1794 when the attacks by Comanche and Apache tribes weakened them to the point that they could not survive. The missions then became norwegian cruises military posts. In 1803 Spanish cavalry from Mexico occupied the original mission and changed its name to Mission del Alamo del Parras.
The city of San Antonio became a part of Mexico after the Mexican Revolution of 1821. Moses Austin, a Missouri pioneer, was the first American to attempt to colonize the frontier. He died before his plan came to fruition but his son Stephen norwegian cruises F. Austin received a land grant from the new government and brought 300 Anglo families to settle in Texas in 1821.
By 1836, 3,500 Anglos lived in the city. When General Santa Anna abolished the 1824 Mexican constitution, these Americans, along with many Hispanic Texans, refused to recognize his presidency, an act of defiance that led to the Battle of the Alamo in 1836.
Texas won its independence at the Battle of San Jacinto later that year. In the 1840 s there was a great influx of German settlers whose descendants still add to the city s cosmopolitan flavor. In 1845 Texas entered the union as the 28th state. Thereafter, Anglos settled the city in greater numbers, and by 1860, San Antonio could claim a population of 8,000.
norwegian cruises The beef industry grew after the civil war. A trail was established to drive cattle from San Antonio to Abilene, Kansas. With the arrival of the railroad in 1877, the city was directly linked to new northern markets In the 1870 s new settlers, adventurers and cowboys on long cattle drives made San Antonio a tough, norwegian cruises hard drinking , hard fighting, gambling town.
San Antonio gained a small but substantial Asian community long before most other Texas cities norwegian cruises when, during the revolution, forces led by Francisco Pancho Villa were lynching Chinese merchants in northern Mexico. American General John J. Pershing launched a south of the border hunt for Villa in 1917. Pershing s mission failed, but he brought norwegian cruises the endangered merchants back to San Antonio with him, and they became permanent residents.
World War I brought the opening of two aviation training centers: Brooks norwegian cruises Air Force base and Kelly Air Force base. Randolph Air Force Base opened in 1930, followed by Lackland Air Force Base in 1942. The military continues to be a vital economic factor in the city.
Since mission times, the San Antonio River has been the key to the city s fortunes. Destructive floods in the 1920s, and subsequent oil drilling, reduced its flow, leading to plans to pave the river over. Instead, a careful landscaping plan, started in 1939 by the WPA, created the Paseo del Rio, or River Walk which is now the aesthetic and commercial focus of San Antonio.
The site that was to become San Antonio was originally a Coahuiltecan Indian village inhabited by a peaceful nomadic tribe. norwegian cruises Spanish norwegian cruises clergy seeking to extend their country s ef

We started out in Austin, where we stayed for two nights. There is so much to do in that town, but a

I realize we live in Texas, but as big as this place is, it's easy to vacation here. We spent a little time in Austin and San Antonio last week, and it was a lot of fun! More than anything it was relaxing, which is exactly what I was looking for.
We started out in Austin, where we stayed car rental and south africa and budget or specials for two nights. There is so much to do in that town, but a lot of it is outdoorsy car rental and south africa and budget or specials and athletic, and well....we weren't car rental and south africa and budget or specials feelin it. We did have a lot of great food. To be honest that's really what I look forward to the most on vacation. Or on a Tuesday. Food is pretty much my favorite thing no matter where I am.
We also went to the state capitol, which was pretty cool. I'm a huge nerd, so I love anything history related, and will go to any historical site or museum that's around. Arsen actually enjoyed it too, which surprised me.
After a couple of days there in Austin, we headed down to San Antonio. We actually really loved it there. We stayed at a super nice hotel down on the Riverwalk, and it was so pretty. The river is lined with restaurants and shops, and that's where we spent pretty much all of our time. The only time we really branched out was when we went to the Alamo. I've been before, years ago when I was maybe 12 years old, and it was Arsen's first time. Like I said, I love all that history stuff, so it was fun for me to hear all about that. We also did a boat tour of the river, and that was a lot of fun. Also, it was nice to just sit there for awhile. We walked so much on this vacation! Our poor feet were killing us halfway through the day every day.
If you've never been to Austin/San Antonio, I definitely recommend it! There is so much more to do that we didn't even have time to do, and San Antonio is super family friendly. Good ole Texas....it's growing on me.
I love your pictures! You are gorgeous! When the college football coaches conference goes to San Antonio I m so tagging along. I ve always wanted to go to the river walk. I m glad you guys had a great trip :) Reply Delete Leigh September 23, 2012 7:07 PM
That looks like such a fun trip! I remember going to both of those cities through out my life and it was always a blast. Looks like y all hit all the hot spots in one go round! Reply Delete Lauren September 23, 2012 7:35 PM
Looks like a great time! I always think of San Antonio as the go to city in Texas for a relaxing/easy vacation. Austin definitely has lots of outdoorsy things to do. Next time if y all feel up to it, let me know! Reply Delete Evani Gatsby September 24, 2012 5:25 PM
Those relaxing trips are some of the BEST ones. And girl we are the same on the food thing, Food is literally what I look forward to most on our vacations! Happy you and Arsen got some quality time together! Reply Delete Add comment Load more...

An employee works on a storefront display at a perfume store a block away from International Bridge No. 1 in downtown Laredo. santa barbara channel island tours Business in the city has been hurt as its sister community, Nuevo Laredo, santa barbara channel island tours Mexico, has seen a rise in violence.
santa barbara channel island tours Border troubles haven't stopped Paula Rangel, 76. She loads collapsed shipping santa barbara channel island tours cartons on her tricycle in downtown Laredo and crosses over to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, where she sells the material for recycling.
A worker crosses Convent Avenue after delivering a load of shoes in downtown Laredo, Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012. Downtown businesses have suffered with sales due to various factors including santa barbara channel island tours the drug war across the Rio Grande in Nuevo Laredo and difficulties in crossing the U.S. Customs checkpoints at the international bridge.
Local customer Maria Luisa Moreno, santa barbara channel island tours center, looks over jewelry at the Gold Coin, Inc. on Convent Avenue in downtown Laredo, Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012. Helping her out is Lupita Paredes, right. Cleaning jewelry is Denise Ventura, left. Downtown businesses have suffered with sales due to various factors including the drug war across the Rio Grande in Nuevo Laredo and difficulties in crossing the U.S. Customs checkpoints according to storeowners.
Roxanne Garcia, left, and Jorge Blanco wait for customers at Special Electronics Perfumes three blocks from the international bridge in Laredo, santa barbara channel island tours Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012. Downtown businesses have suffered with sales due to various factors including the drug war across the Rio Grande in Nuevo Laredo and difficulties in crossing the U.S. Customs checkpoints at the international bridge.
"Laredo is open for business. Make sure you enjoy this safe and wonderful city," he told the assembled customs brokers, manufacturers and transporters, American and Mexican, and all involved in the auto industry.
Salinas spoke with passion about the importance of cross-border cooperation and friendship, and Nuevo Laredo Mayor Benjamin Galvan offered similar sentiments. The two mayors santa barbara channel island tours then shared a hearty "abrazo."
But when a city shares a name and a riverfront with a neighbor that is home to a violent drug mafia, where bodies are hung from bridges and even the mayor's office gets bombed, the perception elsewhere can get blurry.
Last month, prominent local gun dealer Robert Jacaman was charged with illegal weapons santa barbara channel island tours sales to Mexican criminals. Another santa barbara channel island tours round of bad press followed santa barbara channel island tours when American federal veterinarians santa barbara channel island tours refused to inspect cattle in Mexico.
Adding insult to injury, Laredo — with only 10 homicides this year and a violent crime rate that is lower than in San Antonio or Dallas — often is confused by outsiders with its sister city, headquarters of the Zetas, the most feared gangsters in Mexico.
"We get calls from people asking 'What the heck is going on there? It's a war zone. The killing. The smuggling. The drug wars. How can you live there?'" remarked Blasita Lopez , director of the city's Convention Visitors Bureau .
The bureau has a mail-out kit packed with crime statistics that touts Laredo's safety and its attractions. But, Lopez concedes, it's tough to overcome the misperceptions, particularly when trying to persuade someone to book a group event.
Far worse than image problems, the old "Centro" historic district is withering rapidly. The American tourists and tour buses stopped coming years ago, and Mexican shoppers are deterred by the long bridge lines and the dangers of Nuevo Laredo.
"For six years, there has been a stigma, a stereotype, that we are not safe," he said, blaming lazy journalists, cheap-shot santa barbara channel island tours television pundits and would-be security experts, in particular Gen. Barry McCaffrey , who did a study last year of the border commissioned by the Texas Department of Agriculture and the Department of Public Safety .
The study concluded that drug cartels santa barbara channel island tours posed a serious threat to border residents and called for more federal spending, but was quickly criticized as being exaggerated and unfairly tarnishing the border.
In another instance, cited by city police, California Congressman Duncan Hunter , in a speech to Maricopa County Republicans in support of a border fence from Texas to California, claimed there were 600 unsolved murders in Laredo.
The mayor, a former FBI agent, said that after he appeared several years ago on the Glenn Beck show in opposition to a federal plan to build a steel barrier between Laredo and Nuevo Laredo, he was deluged with hateful e-mails and phone calls.
And, Salinas acknowledged, there is no magic fix to bringing the tourists back or reviving the old downtown where, just a couple of generations ago, all of Laredo and most of Nuevo Laredo went to shop.
Once a bustling commercial warren of blaring pop music, merchandise spilling out of storefronts and shoppers jostling santa barbara channel island tours on uneven sidewalks, the Centro has become a forlorn backwater of vacant businesses and window signs shouting "Remate! Liquidaction! Descuento!"
On the weekends, American tourists santa barbara channel island tours came to Laredo to book a hotel room, browse the Chinese-made religious figurines, improbable colored lingerie and other goods peculiar of the Centro, and then walk across the bridge to shop, drink and dine in Mexico.
santa barbara channel island tours "All you need to do is walk around downtown. We have 70-plus empty storefronts. We're down 50 percent to 70 percent in our business here," said Les Norton , 63, whose family has operated a clothing store on Convent Street santa barbara channel island tours for 72 years.
Norton, who is head of the downtown merchants association, blames the city government for not coming up with a plan and resources to save the old downtown. The Centro has magnificent 18th-century architecture, santa barbara channel island tours beautiful plazas and an authentic border ambiance embodied in the La Posada Hotel.
Others, who have no direct stake in the Centro, also fault the city, which they say appears to have no strategic vision for its future beyond increasing commercial trade and truck traffic with Mexico.
Gene Belmares, 48, a native Laredoan and former city councilman who in 2010 was trounced by Salinas in the mayoral election, recalls playing with cousins and shopping with his parents in Nuevo Laredo.
"San Antonio has a River Walk. We've got a river. McAllen has been able to create a thriving downtown, and they don't have any of the history we have," he said. "In the 30 years I've been an adult, no one has taken advantage of the one jewel we have on the Rio Grande. The downtown is a jewel, unpolished and decaying."
Maria Eugenia Guerra , publisher of the local monthly newspaper, "LareDOS News," echoed these thoughts, saying the city seems incapable of coming up with a vision for itself and plan to revive tourism.
But, she said, there is reason for hope. On Monday, the City Council agreed to begin negotiations over a partnership plan proposed santa barbara channel island tours by a private Laredo nonprofit group to reopen and restore the Plaza Theater .
By most measures, Laredo, the busiest land port to Mexico, is doing very well. The city is growing, violent santa barbara channel island tours crime is down and spillover from drug-war violence in Mexico is minimal, police say. But when a city shares a name and a riverfront with a neighbor that is home to a violent drug mafia,...
