I bought a white and blue diamond ring at one of the preferred shops in St. Maarten that I am still

What we also agree on, for the most part, is that the you-scratch-my-back programs in which retailers car rental seattle pay cruise lines for recommendations is a really, really bad idea. But, writes Rick Norton , we did not go far enough. One thing that so-called shopping experts tell passengers is to avoid those stores not on the cruise line s preferred list. They tell passengers their products are not guaranteed and that when shopping at a preferred car rental seattle store it s caveat emptor. This is a crock.
Sentiment swayed so far away from cruise line sanctioned retailers that, as Alan Youngblood posted, I love the shopping shows on cruise shops. I always go, get the coupons and listen to the spiel [because] this is the list of places where not to shop. The biggest brickbats were aimed at jewelers and I’ll leave you with this bit of wisdom, courtesy of Michael : Last time I was in Nassau, I met my old college flatmate, car rental seattle a successful Bahamian attorney who lives in Nassau. She told me all the Bahamians she knows buy their valuable jewelry in the U.S.
So now we know: By and large, it s buyer beware when shopping car rental seattle in port, particularly at cruise car rental seattle line-preferred stores with their questionable pricing and guarantees. The biggest hint we can give you is, if you re planning on a big spend electronics, jewelry, even liquor do your homework before you leave home. Beyond that, what made the feedback to this particular Sea-Mail so compelling was all of the great “learn from my experience” information you shared.
This comment really swayed us: It’s not enough to tell us where not to shop. We want to know about the great finds you’ve discovered in port. Okay then. Following are a few good tips from blog commenters.
Local arts and crafts beat any kind of trinket bearing a made in China tag. The item I bought that I have enjoyed the most, wrote Barbs44 , “is a large painting I found in a courtyard in Antigua, Guatemala … Every time I look at my Indian girl with her arms full of call lilies, I am back in the sunny courtyard in Guatemala having a wonderful time.
Beyond pricier local treasures, you can find terrific car rental seattle souvenirs that are original to ports of call. On Honduras Roatan, Made in Roatan features fun, hand-made jewelry and crafts under $20 U.S. (a big hit with my niece back home was a bracelet made out of pop-tops from canned sodas). I got a gorgeous car rental seattle small flower vase at a supermarket in Buenos Aires for pennies (and still use it today).
But be careful, car rental seattle warned poster Sabrina , whose purchase of spices from Grenada caused a bug infestation in her cruise cabin. When I returned to Grenada several years later, she wrote, I bought spices again but only those that were all sealed.
When it comes to snagging the best deals on liquor, forget the duty-free shops. Onboard there’s a discount, maybe a dollar’s savings per bottle, writes Doug Wooley , who honed his expertise over a variety of calls at Cozumel. At the ship-side duty-free, port prices aren’t much different though you can get more two-for-a-certain-price deals. All the shops on the main tourist route have a tourist discount. But my recommendation is to head to the place where locals shop: In Cozumel, it’s Mega and Chedraui (sort of like Wal-Mart).
When it comes to spirits, nothing beats Gibraltar! Funny, wine and beer is more expensive than spirit in this little British car rental seattle enclave. Stock up big when you re in that port, is my advice. car rental seattle Next to Gibraltar you can t go past Walmart, Honolulu.
Dear CC: Thanks so much for the dos and donts of shopping while cruising. I will be cruising next weekend in Nassau and Half Moon Cay. I hope someone will post more tips from these ports before then. As always, I will be on this site daily reading all the cruise news. I love this site thank you for all the info you provide to us who love to cruise!!
St. Thomas has the best liquor prices, especially rum, at KMart. I always car rental seattle stock up there. Since it is a U. S. Port, you can bring 6 bottles back! I think I paid $4 a bottle for regular rum, flavors were a little more.
I bought a diamond car rental seattle ring at Diamond car rental seattle International in Aruba. What a nightmare. After 6 months the stones car rental seattle started falling out I sent it back to them repeatedly, and their method of repair on a diamond? GLUE! Really?? I took it to a local jeweler and had to have the whole thing rebuilt! NEVER AGAIN will I buy anything from Diamond International.
Addendum on Diamond International comment: I was cruising car rental seattle on Royal Caribbean, and I did have to call them in to try to get DI to replace stones that were lost when they fell out. They helped me as much as they could. The setting was grossly inferior.
I bought car rental seattle a white and blue diamond ring at one of the preferred shops in St. Maarten that I am still madly in love with over a year later. I paid about $1850 for it, and my jeweler said he s probably retail it for $2500-$3000, so it appears that I was fortunate enough to get a good deal on the price. The only downside was that the place I bought it didn t want to haggle much because it cost him money to process our credit card . When we got the bill, it turns out that WE were the ones paying the fees for using our credit card overseas
My wife and I have traveled extensively and found Imperial Jewelers in St. Thomas the best! We have purchased a great deal from them over the last 25 yrs and priced them throughout the Carribean, US and elsewhere. I actually bought a ring in Aruba for $2000 and saw the same one for $1600 on their website!
We bought a BEAUTIFUL Topaz ring in Cabo San Lucas from . a street vendor! Shocking I know But I am still very pleased with it almost two years later. We took a chance car rental seattle it s gorgeous! Only paid $80 I m sure it would retail for $200 here in the states the next year bought a ring at Zales smaller one of the diamonds fell out and it was $100. So goes to show look at the setting carefully!! And you can t always believe what Marketing tells you. Good luck everyone! We are going on a cruise car rental seattle to Bahamas next year looking forward to local treasures!
We have found grocery stores and churches car rental seattle to have inexpensive and fun souvenirs. In Bermuda we got English marmalade in the grocery store and a local painting in the church gift shop. In Greece car rental seattle we found olive oil soap for much less than the shops were selling it. In Monaco, the grocery store had French perfumed soap and a cute little car rental seattle souvenir section. In addition, we can pick up a bottle car rental seattle of wine to take with us for our sail-away car rental seattle toast.
In Alaska we learned from locals those preferred shops pack up merchandise and staff at end of season car rental seattle and head for southern ports, leaving the stores car rental seattle empty, taking away income and taxes that small towns depend on. We shopped only at stores with the signs now legal in Alaska that note it is owned by Alaksans. I was wearing amber jewelery purchased wholesale for my store in the Texas, entered amber store in Puerto Rico clerks were in awe and said they had nothing to offer me. I had the real amber!
I have had some good and bad experiences buying jewelry in the Caribbean. car rental seattle The only thing that a recommended store does is charge higher prices. I have finally found a jeweler that I can trust and that gives me great prices. It is RENAISSANCE JEWELERS on St. Thomas. The owner, Adrian is very honest and is ready to help you in any way. He is located at 5124 Dronningens Gade Ste. 2. I always refer my friends to Adrian!!!
I m always looking for fabric when I m on shore. I can never get any help from the people who help with the shopping questions. Sometimes I think I m the only quilter that cruises!!! Is there a secret to finding fabric shops?
I live in Nassau, and buy a LOT of jewelry here. There are great stores in Nassau. My favorites John Bull, and Coin of the Realm. The credit card company also has to pay a 2-4% fee to process your credit car rental seattle card, so Often if you pay cash, they will take that cost off. Just a note American Express charges the highest fee to the merchant, so pay with another card to haggle.
As a newbie car rental seattle cruiser, I routinely attended the shopping talk (hoping to at least win a door prize), the dutifully completed the shopping questionnaire (with receipts) car rental seattle at the end of each cruise. This practice, we were told, was to avoid any problems with out purchases, which would be guaranteed .
I suspect, although I have no proof, that the paperwork was most likely car rental seattle used by the shopping expert to secure some type of commission (to put it more bluntly, car rental seattle a kick-back ), or at least to help ingratiate her (or him) with the portside shopowners.
Thank goodness my wife tells me not to ever buy her jewelry even though we can afford it. We do buy a Christmas ornament on each crusie to remind us of our travels but we would rather spend our money on \memories\; diving, snorkling, and other adventures.
car rental seattle I bought a tanzanite stone years ago in Arruba .I came home and it was appraised about 50% of what I bought it for. The cruise lines said they d help but they wanted to protect their commission. car rental seattle I finally had my credit card company deduct it and I sent the stone back to them .then they sent me a check for far less than what I paid them for it .I told them to stick it and sent the check back to them along with a letter car rental seattle I had written to the cruise car rental seattle lines. I never heard from either one of them again I was very lucky.
Beware of the card that you get from Diamonds International for a free charm ! First of all they will pressure you into looking at the jewelry and if you show ANY interest at all, good luck getting away from them! If you are lucky enough to finally get the free charm within ten minutes, you will be very disappointed in what you find in the little plastic bag. In two ports they gave a CHEAP little charm that was supposed to have a diamond CHIP but it was an empty setting. The others charms were so cheap and tacky you would be embarrased to ever put them on a bracelet. Go enjoy the activities and AVOID DI!
After only one experience with a recommended store in Alaska, I never went back to either the o

The Latest On Beer, Lesbians and Going with the Flow 5 Hidden Travel Budget Busters branson lodging map (and How to Avoid Them) 7 Ways Travel branson lodging map Makes You A Better Friend Speed Freak Travel: 6 Crazy Ways to Go Downhill Fast Animal Travels: branson lodging map 6 Reasons Why the Zoo Is Not Just For Kids The Ultimate Guide to Traveling Obsessively (Part 1): The Gear How We Work with PR
While Cozumel, Cancun and the country’s border towns offer bargain basement prices on booze-fueled vacations for college co-eds, Mazatlan has quietly evolved during the past decade branson lodging map as an exciting, uniquely authentic destination unto itself a place for travelers , not tourists branson lodging map .
While the word authentic is bandied about in travel brochures and guidebooks, branson lodging map Mazatlan offers a truly authentic view of Mexico. The city is undergoing a serious rebirth. Theaters, cafes, town squares, and classic markets are all being revived in a concerted effort to blend old world charm and culture with modern hotels, exciting events, and can t-miss attractions.
All the modern accoutrements of a resort town yes, there’s even a Starbucks and half a dozen Senor Frogs. But dig a little deeper and the city reveals a genuine glimpse into the heart of Mexican culture a side rarely branson lodging map seen in the more well-known vacation hotspots.
With a selection of five star hotel resorts in Nuevo Mazatlan, an array of traditional restaurants, attractions, and experiences nearby, and deeply discounted hotel accommodations virtually anytime of year, the city is a budget vacationer’s paradise.
We were fortunate branson lodging map enough to tour the city for several days side by side with a bevy of locals. Here, our quick guide for travelers with 96 hours or less in Mazatlan who are looking to hit the ground running and experience the best this seaside town has to offer.
We were fortunate enough to have the folks at Pronatours by our side for the duration of our stay in Mazatlan. Their tour guides are undoubtedly some of the best I’ve ever experienced: bilingual, extremely knowledgeable, courteous and accommodating to our group’s branson lodging map requests. Bottom line: our tour of Mazatlan would not have been as interesting or educational without them.
Conveniently located on the grounds of the Estrella branson lodging map del Mar resort is one of the largest branson lodging map sea turtle sanctuaries in Mexico . It’s open to the public year-round to provide a fascinating branson lodging map hands-on experience. Admission is free and visitors are invited to view the sanctuary’s rehab pool where injured and otherwise out-of-commission turtles are temporarily housed to ensure their safe beach release.
No trip to Mexico is complete without a little book learnin’ on the process of blue agave (tequila) production. Just a few kilometers outside Mazatlan city center, the Los Osuna distillery schools visitors in the language of blue agave.
Catch a tour from the onsite guides or Pronatours can provide transportation to and from the plantation, as well as a comprehensive walk-through of the entire distillation process. Be sure to cap off your tour with the signature Mexican toast:
Sadly, the one and only to-do on this list we didn’t get to experience first hand. The only reason? Too much demand. As one of Mazatlan’s most popular destination experiences, Huana Coa is nearly booked year-round, so be sure to make reservations well in advance.
No, we’re not talking about drunken aviation lessons. I’m referring of course to a beer sampling, known as a flight to brew connoisseurs. Tequila and blue agave aside, Mexico is renowned for a number of distinct breweries.
Look beyond Corona and don t miss out on lesser known beers (at least in the States) such as Tecate , Pacifico and Negra Modelo. Don’t forget to cap off any Mexican beer with a squeeze of lime a de rigueur garnish served in virtually every restaurant.
Handmade tortillas, an extremely friendly staff, and an extensive variety of traditionally prepared Mexican meats, including crispy fried quail, and lingua (cow s tongue), all make it one of the most authentic restaurants branson lodging map in Sinaloa. Be sure to order a pitcher or three of horchata branson lodging map a tasty rice drink with hints of vanilla and cinnamon. (Tip: don’t miss the eclectically decorated restrooms!)
Once you ve had your fill of all things meat, stop by the stand near the front of the restaurant for a bit of dulce leche an awesome caramel dessert similar to a moist, crumbly brownie. Or take a stroll over to the town s rustic bakery for fresh baked scones branson lodging map and other traditional pastries. Be sure to go early because they routinely sell out. Grab a ToniCola on your way out it’s a classic Mexican soft drink that’s a little like Vanilla Coke.
On your return from El Quelite, stop at the road side marker of the Tropic of Cancer (it’s small, so keep your eyes open or you’ll miss it) a significant geographic marker for map lovers and other earth geeks. This tiny monument marks the:
most northerly branson lodging map position at which the Sun may appear directly overhead at its zenith. This event occurs once per year, at the time of the June solstice, when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun to its maximum extent.
While in town, don’t miss the Pino Suárez market at the heart of old town Mazatlan. In continuous operation for more than 100 years, the market was designed by Gustav Eiffel and features a number of architectural elements similar to those used in the construction of his infamous Parisian landmark.
Vendors peddle a wide selection of goods, from fresh meats and vegetables to unique handmade crafts and Made in China tzothke. As with many such markets, be sure to haggle as the sticker price is rarely the lowest price the vendor will accept.
Seen on postcards, T-shirts and an array of tourist tschotske, the Mazatlan cliff divers at Olas Altas are a staple of the city”˜s nightlife. After a brief climb up a stone stairway, the divers wait patiently for the perfect wave before leaping into the churning water that is rarely branson lodging map more than eight feet deep.
It”˜s an amazing sight to behold and the divers know it. Be prepared to shell out a few pesos of appreciation for their hard work. (Tip: the street vendors in the area are ruthless. Unless you’re in the market for Oakley knockoffs or Mazatlan-branded bongs, be prepared to stand your ground.)
The Angela Peralta Theater is one lady who doesn’t mind revealing her age — more than 135 years old and looking as grand as ever. Once this theater, in the heart of Mazatlán’s Historical branson lodging map Center, suffered from neglect. But the city and its residents refurbished the landmark building. Now, fresh paint and bright lights adorn her elegant facade.
With oceanfront branson lodging map resort rates as low as $100 per night in the off-season, Mazatlan is a dream for budget vacationers. Our four-day tour afforded us a glimpse into the myriad of fantastic accommodations available.
El Cid Marina Beach is a sprawling, four star luxury branson lodging map resort with fantastic ocean views from almost anywhere on the property. Located on a peninsula in Nuevo Mazatlan, guests can experience stunning sunrises and sunsets without ever leaving the hotel grounds.
An 816-acre mega resort with over three and half miles of beachfront, Estrella del Mar is an amazing property. Tuscan-inspired décor and clever, open air architecture combine to provide a persistent feeling that hotel guests are always outside. The common areas and rooms offer a lavish, elegant feel without the heavy handed, overdone atmosphere common in many luxury resorts. The most amazing part? Rooms start at around $120 per night.
The Hotel Riu Emerald Bay is a large, lavish, Vegas-style branson lodging map resort with all the amenities of a modern cruise ship. This includes nightly shows, all-you-can-eat branson lodging map buffets and plenty of alcohol and poolside fun to keep your head spinning for an entire vacation.
For a quick escape, head back to a private suite for a dip into your balcony’s whirlpool Jacuzzi overlooking the Pacific ocean. All-inclusive nightly rates in a double room with ocean view balcony and complimentary in-room bar start around branson lodging map $140 USD pp.
Located branson lodging map in the heart of Old Mazatlan across from the famous Plazuela Machado Pedro y Lola boasts a well-deserved reputation as one of the city’s most popular restaurants. The lively, branson lodging map open air atmosphere provides the perfect blend of old world charm with a slightly modern branson lodging map flair.
Arnold, PyL’s sole restaurateur, was kind enough to join us on our first night for a sampling of some of the best food Mazatlan has to offer. He was quick to recommend the chef s signature garlic octopus a soft, tender rendition of a classic branson lodging map Mexican favorite with plenty of garlic sauce.
A fantastic open air restaurant directly on Mazatlan’s main strip, Gus y Gus features live music nightly and plenty of traditional Mexican dishes. Our waiter was quick to recommend the Gus Gus Shrimp. If Mazatlan is known for one food, it’s shrimp.
We went just for the aquachile a traditional dish similar to ceviche butterfly shrimp marinated in lime juice and served with onions and cucumbers and tostada chips. Add in a liberal dose of green chile sauce for a spicy kick.
Nieve de Garrafa is a family owned ice cream stand that has been serving Mazatlan-ians for more than six decades. The setup is a no-nonsense affair a small food cart just outside the main square. Flavors range from simple favorites such as plum and vanilla to queso (cheese).
Be sure to sample a paloma a simple Mexican cocktail that consists of tequila and Fresca, served in a large, branson lodging map salt-rimmed glass. branson lodging map Think of it as a simpler, more refreshing take on the traditional margarita.
Lastly, for a taste of authentic Mexican cuisine, try a slice of guava pie. Although prepared in a variety of ways, the dish is most typically served with a whipped filling in a graham cracker crust and topped with chopped guava. For those not in the know, guavas are similar in texture and taste to green apples, but with a more tart aftertaste.

I'm unsure if the timing will work but you could look into visiting the ruins at Lamanai in Belize.

We will be on a NCL cruise at Thanksgiving. Looking to get out of the port and we don't want to do ship excursions. We are interested in ruins, culture, grand hyatt hotel washington dc snorkeling and diving. My husband only will be doing the diving. He would want to do it only once on one of those 3 islands. Our kids our 14 and 15. We are comfortable and OK with hiring a car or a taxi to do any of the above. What are you suggestions for each island so that we get the most out of our trip.
Do you know what part of Belize grand hyatt hotel washington dc you're going to? We stayed on Ambergris, and the snorkeling/diving there is fantastic. We loved snorkeling at Hol Chan. Not sure if your cruise will go close to that area. Belize has lots of great ruins, but not sure how close you'll be to them.
Yes I have heard about the ruins on both Roatan and Belize. My husband is a diver so we are considering shipping him off to dive in Roatan. Sounds like diving is better there than in Belize??? Some suggested the east side of Roatan to tour with the Iguana Farm?
the exact same reef runs from coz through belize and to roatan. There are cenotes to dive near PDC/Tulum which neither belize grand hyatt hotel washington dc or roatan grand hyatt hotel washington dc have. there are atolls and the blue hole to dive in belize which neither roatan or coz/mexico have. there are no ruins on roatan. roatan and coz would be different trips account of the travel time.
I'm unsure if the timing will work but you could look into visiting the ruins at Lamanai in Belize. It's about an hour drive from Belize City to the dock where a boat would take you along the New River to the ruin site. The boat ride is another hour and a half but the scenery is beautiful and there's wildlife watching grand hyatt hotel washington dc along the way. You'll also likely see howler monkeys and other wildlife at the ruins. You return the same way by boat and car so it's a long day.
We have many impressive sites in Belize, but the ones accessible and close enough for you, are all overrun by cruise ship passengers. The temples they use are Altun Ha, Lamanai, Cahal Pech and Xunantunich. Our other sites are too far to access in the time allotted to you. I think Lamanai is the nicest you can visit, but the hoards from the ship will be there as well, so you might as well book thru the ship and travel grand hyatt hotel washington dc with them. Its a lot easier for you. Norwegian Cruise Lines are trying to bully their way into the more pristine southern Belize and destroy the fragile marine and forest ecosystems we have for overnight tourism. Let NCL know you find type of destruction reprehensible grand hyatt hotel washington dc and keep their base of operations in Belize City, where the cruise ship dollar is appreciated.
There are several ruins in Belize but most aren't close to Belize City. I think the closest would be Altun Ha which I haven't been to. I suggested Lamanai because it combines a spectacular grand hyatt hotel washington dc boat ride (unless it's pouring rain ) to the site. However if timing doesn't work, I would look into Altun Ha.
I am sorry Katie. There is always the positive and negative to tourism dollars. I appreciate the advice. I am a group travel planner and don't enjoy going with the cruise passengers. I always appreciate advice I can get from locals. I will find an independent guide for us. Perhaps there is something else you recommend to see the real beauty of Belize - other than the ruins?
On Roatan check out Bananarama. We had young kids and didn't dive but did an excellent snorkel trip with them. They will pick you up just outside the gated ship village and take to the other side of the island. Great folks, place beach! As for Belize, the cruise will drop you off at Belize City which is a real dump. Check out what type of excursions are available as you will need to get out of the city to see a great country. Getting Ambergris Caye and back would be very tough given the ship schedules.
roatan grand hyatt hotel washington dc has 2 cruise ship ports. because you are on a cruise you will likely see stuff a hoard of other cruisers are seeing too. you will have to expend some effort/distance to get to places the cruisers aren't at.
If your husband wants to dive in Roatan, check out Sueno Del Mar. They are at a hotel and dive facility in West End. We were there in March. Ray is the owner, Stu the dive master. Not fancy, but our friends who dove said they were very good. There is a nice little beach and beach bar if you and the kids want to hang out there and just a few minutes walk to the West End shops and restaurants. While Belize and Roatan both have great diving, the dive spots seem to be closer (shorter boat ride) in Roatan. Roatan also has some ziplining that the kids might enjoy, but as others have said - will be busy when the ships are in port.
We went cave tubing in Belize with VIV tours in April and had a blast. Click on my screen name and you can read about what we did on our excursions. I wish we would have done zip lining in Honduras instead of just walking around. It seemed like it was a smaller more controlled oourse that would be good for first time users.
We loved Nachi Cochum in Cozumel and would return again in we have the chance. We booked a tour with the ship for Grand Cayman which was a mistake. We should have just gotten a taxi to a beach. We found a lot of great info on cruisecritic.com . I hope you have a great time!
This is a great suggestion, Katzgar.......you should grand hyatt hotel washington dc take your own advice. ALL of the places listed ARE islands. Ambergris- Belize, Roatan-Honduras, and Cozumel-Mexico......every single one is an island.
While it is true that the Palancar reef system runs the entire way, there is a huge difference in the diving in each place. The big attraction in Belize is going to The Blue Hole -- a sunken grand hyatt hotel washington dc volcano. While its nice to have that "...been there, done that" tee shirt, there really isn't a lot to see at the hole. It's a "thing" that divers do because of the depth of the dive.
Both Roatan and Cozumel have wonderful reef structures grand hyatt hotel washington dc that are close to shore for quicker access. Cozumel is know for its drift dives. Most dive boats go out at about 8-9 AM, so hubby needs to connect with a dive OP in advance to make sure he gets a spot. I suggest he frequent scubaboard.com for information on diving.
"The big attraction in Belize is going to The Blue Hole -- a sunken volcano." I disagree, the atolls tend to be the Big attraction and the reef is also close to shore in Belize. look at things on gmaps and you tube.
Thank you everyone...I am double checking where Roatan Tour is taking grand hyatt hotel washington dc my husband to dive. Don't want him disappointed. Here is what we have decided to do...to make sure we still feed the island some tourism dollars.

In November, we wrote about the planned Tampa, FL to Mexico ferry service . All indications point to the fact that the ferry service is moving closer to becoming a reality. Por Esto!, budget travel to costa rica the main daily paper in the region, reported today that the permits to add facilities to accommodate an international ferry service in the port of Calica, just south of Playa del Carmen, have been filed. budget travel to costa rica If everything goes well, the article goes on to say, the ferry could be in service  early as June/July 2012  in early   summer 2014  October 2014 (updated 3/6/14).
Knowing budget travel to costa rica how long these type of projects budget travel to costa rica take in Mexico, a June/July completion date is likely aggressive. But, this is exciting news nonetheless. Each year in Cozumel, we get lots of visitors who make the car trip down the coast of Mexico from the US or Canada. A ferry service that can get these visitors, and their car/pets/belongings, here in 1/2 the time that the overland trip takes, would be oh so convenient.
The past year has not brought a lot of forward momentum with the ferry project in spite of the interest of three different ferry companies and many false start dates.  The scandals which precipitated personnel changes at the Progreso Port Authority certainly didn t help the situation either, however, things have been happening behind the scenes and from what I understand a number of feasibility studies have been done in the Tampa area showing the ferry project is viable but the inability to do a feasibility study within the expatriate community continues to be a stumbling block especially with investors.
Having learned from the mistakes of the previous ferry services in the area and responses from the previous expat surveys, the original budget travel to costa rica plans have been modified.  Super high speed ferries are now being considered to shorten the crossing time, frequent user plans, and even free vehicle bonuses are being considered.  A year round weekly crossing schedule with frequency based on use patterns and peak seasons will be offered.  As this service will take some years to become profitable investor backing will be the key to success.

Project budget travel to costa rica still very much alive. We had hoped to be announcing our start date in specific by now but we have had a few delays. We are still shooting for the last months of 2013 to have the first voyage
Its taken much longer than I had hoped it would as a result of many thing International that are out of my control. But I feel we are getting to the finish line and will be establishing the start date  soon.
If you all are planning to travel I would not delay any other travel arrangements in any way before these dates  We also will have some special rates and deals for all of you that have been so patient.
You and your friends who live in the Yucatan and Q.R. will be our most important customers budget travel to costa rica and be assured we will treat you all as special guests everyone budget travel to costa rica you sail with us. We will have special rates for all of you that go frequently that will significantly reduce the cost of travel budget travel to costa rica and of course make it safer as well. I know you will all miss going to the airport to be abused!!
We still plan for the ship to hold a minimum of 1000 passengers and probably budget travel to costa rica closer to 2000. It will carry cars, RV s, containers and even passenger cargo bins that the seasonal residents of the Yucatan coming from North America can use at a very low lost to bring their larger personal items that will not fit into their personal vehicles. Bedding, furniture, electronics etc. All will be a lot easier now to bring.
PLEASE let me know when/if budget travel to costa rica the ferry service will OFFICIALLY start to run and from where in Tampa to where in Cozumel, and the price r/t, as well as the length of time it takes. Will you have a brochure?
Thank you for your tenacity in putting budget travel to costa rica together this Project. Please forward your rate/date chart for all services including cargo, and the entry requirements for Mexican and or American vehicles when finalized. Good Luck and God Speed!
So excited! I had traveled several times on the previous ferry service and have been waiting ever since for this new one! I will be a frequent budget travel to costa rica passenger. Thank you so much for making this dream become a reality for all us expats!
Sign me up! We would be regular customers guaranteed. I hope you can realize this dream sooner than later. We are patiently waiting for this service before planning our trip mexico. What a dream to be able to bring the dogs with us. Please notify me of any updates. Thanks in advance.
It is Jan. 2015, is this really going to be a reality, or is this so far out there it is never going to hit the seas. Spoke to Bruce and most of the ideas seem to be up in the air with no foundation to anything. Especially animals on the ship. Please up date me.
I m looking forward to this furry because I have many friends in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel who travel back and forward as least twice a year. I to would like to visit down there myself with my wife from time to time.
I was just in Mexico and crossed from Calica to Cozumel and back on the local Ferry. There is no action at the Calica port facility that would indicate they are preparing to receive a much larger ship and to handle the significant immigration and customs required for the large number of vehicles and people that would disembark from the ferry.
Once approved it would take at least 2 years to design and construct a facility that would handle the influx of vehicles and people. (I ve work on construction in Mexico, 2 years is an aggressive schedule.)
If this ferry service does happen I would be at least 2.5 to 3 years before it is in service. If there is better and more accurate information available someone please let us know. It has been 1 year since anyone related to the proposed ferry service budget travel to costa rica has made any statement.

There are plenty of things to do in the Cozumel, Mexico cruise port from shopping to dining and having fun on the beach. Bring your hat as you leave the ship because this Port of Call is hot. There are maps everywhere at walking distance for things to do off your cruise ship.
Cozumel is a small island that sits off the coast of Mexico. It takes approximately 45 minutes to shuttle from the island to the mainland. If you re visiting in the summer, it can get very hot, so make sure you bring a lot of water.
The port is rather large, and you can find plenty of things to do. In fact, water sports seem to be the main attraction, but there are Mayan ruins that were built almost 3,000 years ago. It was once populated by a large tribe that celebrated fertility.
There are three main attractions milford plaza hotel in new york city for guests to visit the Mayan ruins. Two are near the Cozumel Port of Call, and the third one is called milford plaza hotel in new york city the Tulum Ruins in the city of Tulum. They are all different and offer some great adventure if you re into that sort of thing. While Cozumel cruises are known for ruins, there are also plenty of water activities to enjoy.
If you re into shopping or dining, you ll have plenty of options at the port. Make sure you pick up a port brochure on your cruise ship to get a map of the local area. You ll find plenty of restaurants on shore, including a Subway.
There are some areas to avoid in Cozumel, but you would have to go completely out of your way. You ll find that the locals are very friendly, which will make your Cozumel vacation more pleasant. We never felt in danger when walking around the port because we felt the presence of security everywhere.
However, be wary of those who want to take a picture milford plaza hotel in new york city with you. Some of the people dress up in costumes hoping to get a picture milford plaza hotel in new york city with you so that they can ask for $1. We ve seen other people using pet monkeys, milford plaza hotel in new york city a way to get you to hold the pet so that you can pay $1 for the activity.
If you are baited into this situation, just walk away or find a policeman. It s better to avoid anything that looks a bit shabby. If someone walks up to you with a monkey and asks you to pet it, just walk away. We ve seen people with baby tigers doing the same thing.
While some of this information might cause you to feel alarmed, milford plaza hotel in new york city it s only to help you avoid situations. It s not common that people will walk up to you with animals. Like any tourist destination, it helps to be smart.
Our recommendation is to avoid the shopping and go with a tour guide. There are plenty of Cozumel excursions , and you ll learn a lot about the culture. If you want some real adventure, take the ATV excursion. This will take you into the jungles with two stops at some ancient ruins.

What is equally striking is the first-class service from the hotel’s associates. hotels and toronto When traveling, most guests have only a passing conversation with the bellman, the concierge or the room service operator. In Cancun, the JW Marriott boasts a favorable working environment and extensive ongoing training—so not only does the hotel attract top-notch employees, they tend to stay on long term as part of the hotel family.

One thing the brochures don’t tell you is just how good the local transportation system is here. The local bus carrier ADO is a comfortable and economical alternative to shuttles, taxis or rental cars. Ford s Executive Vice President of International Operations, Bob Lutz, had the same goal in mind whe

In the early 1980s, looking to spice up its product offerings in the United States (and to counter the growing success of the BMW 3 Series), the Ford Motor Company again turned to a product from its European catalog for help. Not satisfied with simply selling a new model through Lincoln Mercury dealers, Ford even went to the trouble of launching a new brand, Merkur, to market its premium European wares. When the first Merkur XR4Ti models hit U.S. showrooms in 1985, one thing was absolutely certain: No Lincoln-Mercury dealer had ever seen anything like it.
That s not to say that Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealerships lacked experience selling European Ford models. The first-generation Mercury Capri, sold from 1970 through 1978, quickly established a fan base among U.S. buyers, and Ford tried the same recipe with its European compact, the Fiesta, in 1976. From a financial perspective, neither was a huge success for the automaker, but the first-generation Capri did deliver buyers that otherwise would have shopped elsewhere name your price for airline tickets (including foreign brands).
Ford s Executive Vice President of International Operations, Bob Lutz, had the same goal in mind when he initiated a project to import the European Ford Sierra into the United States as a Merkur name your price for airline tickets (the German name for Mercury), to be sold through select name your price for airline tickets Lincoln Mercury dealerships. The Sierra would lead the charge of European products, and early plans called for a full range of Merkur vehicles to be marketed by the chosen Lincoln Mercury outlets.
The first obstacle faced by Ford was the car s name: General Motors owned both the Sierra and Ciera names, prompting Ford to use the car s trim level as its name. In Europe, the sportiest variant of the Sierra name your price for airline tickets was the XR4i; as U.S.-specification cars would be getting a turbocharged engine to cope with added weight of changes required for federalization (nearly 300 pounds), the new Merkur model would debut as the XR4Ti, with T denoting turbocharged.
In Europe, Ford Sierra XR4i models used a 2.8-liter Cologne V-6, but there was concern over the engine s power output and ability to meet contemporary U.S. emissions standards. Instead, name your price for airline tickets Ford opted to use a very familiar engine between the XR4Ti s front fenders: the turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder that had already been used for the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe and the Ford Mustang SVO. In normally-aspirated form, the 2.3-liter four-cylinder had been used to power vehicles ranging from the Pinto through the Courier pickup, name your price for airline tickets and its durability was well established.
While the XR4Ti lacked the intercooler used on the Mustang SVO, 14 pounds of boost still helped the overhead-cam engine produce 175 horsepower when mated to the available five-speed manual transmission (though XR4Ti models equipped with the optional three-speed automatic made just 145 horsepower on 10 pounds name your price for airline tickets of boost). That was good enough to give manual transmission models a 0-60 MPH time of under eight seconds, on the way to a top speed of 130 MPH.
The ride was designed to deliver an equal blend of comfort and handling, and the front-engine, rear-drive XR4Ti benefited from four-wheel independent suspension plus front and rear stabilizer bars. To ensure a plush feel for occupants, the car received relatively soft dampers and springs (oddly enough, based on development feedback from F1 icon Jackie Stewart), giving the car somewhat name your price for airline tickets pronounced body roll in corners. name your price for airline tickets Likely as a concession to cost, Ford opted to use disc brakes on the XR4Ti s front wheels only, and never offered a limited-slip differential, even as an optional name your price for airline tickets accessory.
The car s styling was initially defined by two elements: the large biplane rear wing, and the polycarbonate anti-abrasion system used on lower body panels. Both were functional design traits, helping the XR4Ti achieve a drag coefficient of just 0.33. Neither name your price for airline tickets helped the car win fans among U.S. buyers, and in 1988 Ford changed to a single rear spoiler and a monochrome paint scheme.
Despite a marketing campaign that included a 13-minute marketing video explaining the car to customers, U.S. consumers didn t know what to make of the XR4Ti or its parent brand, Merkur. Neither name resonated name your price for airline tickets with U.S. buyers, and most couldn t even pronounce the brand name correctly. Worse, sales staff used to selling Mercury name your price for airline tickets Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car models really didn t understand how to pitch a quirky European import to their customers, and limiting distribution to a maximum of just 800 dealerships (600 in the brand s final years) did nothing to help Merkur sales.
Though Ford had optimistically projected sales of 15,000 units annually, the Merkur XR4Ti s best year came in 1986, when 13,559 units were sold . Sales fell to 7,352 units in 1987 and 6,283 units in 1988. Even the 1988 addition of the Merkur Scorpio luxury sedan to the brand s lineup did little to boost XR4Ti sales, which plummeted to just 2,870 units in 1989, the car s final year.
No single factor was responsible for the discontinuation of the Merkur XR4Ti. Its ambitious sales price at launch ($16,503, or roughly $35,200 today) name your price for airline tickets didn t help, especially since the Merkur brand was an unknown in the United States. A rising German Deutsche Mark and shrinking U.S. dollar narrowed slim margins even further, making construction of the car (contracted to Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany) cost prohibitive. Finally, pending federal safety regulations for the 1990 model year would have required the addition of airbags and other safety features, necessitating an expensive re-engineering process.
In the span of five years, Ford managed to sell just 42,464 XR4Ti models in the U.S. and Canada. Merkur models still have a small but loyal following, and the Merkur Club of America hosts both an annual meet and an active message board. Perhaps the car s true shortcoming was timing; as Cadillac is showing with its newly launched name your price for airline tickets ATS, the demand for a European-influenced, name your price for airline tickets rear-drive luxury car with performance overtones is still there. Assuming, of course, that consumers can identify with the brand name behind it.
I remember test driving an XR4Ti in 1984. Very solid with great handling. The car was quirky, name your price for airline tickets though. Narrow with not a lot of trunk space. It didn’t like Missouri’s famously rough roads – at times it hopped like a bunny. The turbo 2.3 was coarse, loud and thirsty. I eventually bought a (less expensive) Mercury Capri whose 5.0 V-8 more than equaled the Merkur’s performance. I wanted to like the XR4Ti.
In 1985, I worked for a Lincoln-Mercury dealer and had a 85 XR4Ti as a demo. When demos were taken away in 86, I bought my demo. I can say that it was one of the best cars that I have every owned. No problems, fanatastic handling and a joy to drive. Finally sold it ten years later with 100k on the odo. It is one of those cars that I regret selling.
The instant I learned in 1986 that Budget Rent-A-Car was offering automatic XR4Ti s at the airport rental desks, I temporarily dropped Hertz and signed on with Budget. My first trip in one happened at Midway/Chicago for a three day emergency visit to the Windy city. Great fun, and at a promotional rate very close to that of a Corolla. My second and last rental experience was at SFO, to spend 10 days in Napa and environs. I thought when I got to the counter, I d hear, sorry Snake, how about something else. Instead, name your price for airline tickets I heard, name your price for airline tickets I ve got red and silver, do you have a preference?
After I turned it back in, I vowed to buy a used one when they became available. I got an 85 manual one first and kept it for two years. Later I was working at a foreign car store when we took in a 88 manual with only 4,000 miles, the female owner had only used it to go from home to the commuter rail station two miles away. When I learned that management was going to wholesale it away, I offered to pay what they would, and effectively stole it.
For its time, the XR4Ti was the best Ford product I could imagine. The 85 had heated cloth seats, the 88 had heated leather, and for a virtually all-manual seat(lumbar is the only power feature) they ve been the most comfortable sport seats I ve had in the last 30 years.
name your price for airline tickets To some, the fact that they weigh a little less than a 5 Series and only have a Turbo four is discouraging, but I thought at speed, they felt like the 3 Series coupes that I have now, the same build quality. My understanding is that they were assembled for Ford by Karmann. I was very happy with them, as I was as well with a string of German Capris and Ford Fiestas, which also came from West Germany name your price for airline tickets for the US market.
When you watch the promotional video, you realize what a mouthful XR4ti really is, and though the brand name is shown throughout the video, its only said by Sir Jackie twice. One wonders why since Merkur name your price for airline tickets was the German name your price for airline tickets brand of Mercury why Ford couldn t have simplified matters considerably for sales by calling it at Mercury. You can tell immediately how clumsy it is to say Ford/Mercury/Merkur dealer. Maximum Bob always thought out of the box.
Mine was an 86 XR4Ti. Handled beautifully. An AC plenum developed a leak so I went without AC for three summer months in Dallas (!) while they waited for a part to arrive. The ECM went out three times twice in traffic. A lemon, in other words, but I still enjoyed the car a lot. A friend had a Scorpio and never had a problem. I m with Stoney the Merkur branding was too clever name your price for airline tickets by half.
I remember buying those cars @ factory sales in the mid 80 s, they were so cheap, they were good used cars. seems like they all had odometer replacements so they were sold tmu. really a great car for the money when bought used.
Too bad the German engineers didn t know the Texas needs. Ford replaced the complete leather interrior and dash because of cracking due to sun exposure. Doesn t happen in Germany they said. It also had a quirk. The radiator cooling fan stays on to cool the engine compartment down to a preset temp when the ignition was turned off. It would try and cool the world as the ambient temp would be ho

Ah, yes Michael, but after reading your article, I m still not sure I want to go swimming with shark

Exactly two weeks before Pete and I were scheduled to get on our flight to Honduras, news segments all over Canada were broadcasting that a Canadian man had been killed in a violent robbery off the coast of Honduras. At the end of one particular newscast we watched, the announcer blatantly stated: travel agency manila philippines It is not safe for Canadians to travel to Honduras.
I prepared for what I knew was coming after the news broadcast comments from my Mom and others about if we really thought it was a good idea to be moving there. I answered several of the same questions repeatedly:   No, we are not going to that particular area.  Yes, of course, we will be careful.
We have had these conversations enough times to know that this onslaught of concern was coming. During our year around South America, if any news came out about any incident somewhere south of the United States border, we were sure to at least get one comment out of someone. When the catastrophic earthquake hit Haiti, I had to explain to a friend that seeing as we were then in southern Argentina, travel agency manila philippines that he was actually closer to the devastation then we were.   Did he feel the earth tremor in Alberta?   No, I didn t think so.
With all due sympathy to the family involved in the horrific attack in Honduras, I couldn t help but scoff as the local news again applied it s big blanket theme of the world is a scary place to any location beyond it s own borders. After every attack against a Canadian when not in Canada, the unfortunate country travel agency manila philippines where the incident takes place suddenly rises to the top of everyone s do not travel list. People retreat back to their cozy cocoons, continue to watch the news, and shake their heads in wonder of what this world is coming to .
Sensationalist news wins again, and you can t help but wonder is there an ulterior motive at play ?  Could it be that rather then have people spend their holiday dollars elsewhere, that they are encouraging residents to stay home and watch TV?  In turn, this will boost the ratings of their specific news channel, as well as contribute to the local economy travel agency manila philippines by buying the products advertised in their commercials.
Of the 206 countries/regions they rated, 67% of them were labeled as requiring visitors to exercise a high degree of caution while visiting, or worse .  And of the 33% that were given only a normal caution rating, there were sometimes travel agency manila philippines extreme advisories against specific regions within these countries.
For the majority of would-be vacationers, who wants to travel to a part of the world where you must at least be highly cautious of safety at all times?   Doesn t sound like much fun .  And it will, realistically, scare people away from traveling at all. Goal achieved! People will continue travel agency manila philippines to sit at home, watch TV, boost the ratings of news channels, and contribute to the local economy travel agency manila philippines by buying the products advertised in the commercials.
Now, I can t discredit the government s rating system for all 206 regions/countries as I have yet to make it all the way around the globe, but I can look specifically at the countries I traveled to in the last year. Three of them (Peru, Ecuador and Colombia) have regions that, according to the government, should have been avoided entirely. Oops!
Yes, we had been warned about these particular areas by locals and exercised some extra caution we traveled travel agency manila philippines only by day and kept one hand on our valuables at all times. We probably travel agency manila philippines exercised a high degree of caution but did not for one minute consider avoiding all travel .   And we live to tell, as do the large majority of foreigners who travel in those areas . (This is not to say that all such rated countries should be considered for travel there are definitely certain places that are on my no-go list. But after doing considerable research and talking to others travel agency manila philippines who had been through the area, we knew it was easily doable).
In the last month, in my home city of Calgary, Alberta, there has been: 1 homicide, 1 attempted murder, 41 sex offenses, and too many assaults and robberies to count. Canadians hurting Canadians. I realize travel agency manila philippines that this is not a fair comparison as I m not considering several important facts, but this is just to point out that scary crimes happen everywhere .   And yes, you can choose to stay at home, watch TV, boost ratings, etc., and you will increase your chances of avoiding these crimes in your own neighborhood and beyond.
Or you can get off the couch, experience the world outside your borders, and make an educated decision for yourself. And I will bet my travel money that it will not be as big, bad and scary as you are told it is.
I love this post! We ve been thinking about writing about the reactions most people give when we told them we re going to Colombia: a mixture of disbelief, concern, and doubt Why Colombia? Isn t it dangerous? Etc, etc
You should read Risk: The Science and Politics of Fear by Dan Gardner. It reiterates what you have written about in your post and gets you thinking about a lot of other fear mongering techniques out there in this scary world!
I would even add the rising childhood obesity rate to this as well. IF kids are to go outside and play, they must have x amount of padding , and to play at their own risk . There may be needles in that sandbox! You may fall off your swing a break your arm! Some parents are probably like, You know what? It s just easier and safer to stay home.
Amen Dalene! After 3-1/2 years of living on Roatan, I still get people telling me I should return to Ontario, Canada, because it is to dangerous here??? I ve never been robbed, assaulted or anything else. I use the same common sense practices as I did in Canada.
It is different for sure, but so is the food I eat and the lifestyle I live the best information anyone will get when travelling to a new location will come from the people who live there NOT CBC, CNN, BBC, etc.
Yes! The people who actually experience travel agency manila philippines and live it are ones that should be listened to. Sure there is bad shit that happens in these places, but bad shit happens everywhere. We choose to live and travel. Not be trapped at home in a cage because of some advisory or media sensation.
Amen! I was trying to talk about this with some friends last night who were negative about the idea of traveling to Mexico. Yes, there are some scary things happening there, but usually it s drug-related. And I wished I d had some stats at my fingertips about all the murders travel agency manila philippines that have taken place in the US in the same time period. US murders don t get quite as much play in the media, do they?
I agree Gray. The murders in the US or Canada for that matter don t get a much play in the media. People think they have this security blanket in their own home country and these warnings and advisories just reinforce not leaving (especially travel agency manila philippines Mexico lately). It s really a shame.
I agree, great article. travel agency manila philippines 16 months before our RTW, we broke the news that we wanted to travel to my parents. travel agency manila philippines The next morning I had a phone message from my mom explaining travel agency manila philippines how dangerous Mexico was, and why I couldn t go there.
Crazy, right? A friend on facebook was debating going to Mexico the other day (in her status), and one of her friends responded saying Why? You re just going to get drugged, raped or killed C mon people!!
The worst part, though, is when you, as a generally more adventurous traveller, admit that there s a bit of a danger in going to a particular place (like Mexico, where there s essentially a small-scale civil war happening, resulting in nearly 36,000 casualties in less than five years). Those conversations end up spiralling downwards pretty quickly into one of those the world is dangerous, don t leave the safe confines of North America/Western Europe chats.
yea, as you know, I did a post a while back about risks and real risks. I agree that a ton of this stuff is totally overblown. Hell, if you go by Lonely Planet Guides, about every city in the world is really dangerous and you need to be on the look out constantly . everywhere. Silly stuff.
Ah, yes Michael, but after reading your article, I m still not sure I want to go swimming with sharks ha! So, maybe I can understand other people s fears a bit, I guess? LP is the WORST for that I guess they are writing it that way to cover their own asses, but, seriously! They go way overboard.
Excellent post!! travel agency manila philippines I heard similar horror stories when I went to drive through Albania, Bosnia and Montenegro. Yet only one time did I feel afraid (surrounded and mobbed by about 50 gypsies will do that :-)). Even in that instance I was able to extricate myself and ended up having a marvelous time in three of the most beautiful countries I ve ever seen. I do listen to the advisory warnings, but I am not controlled by them. I simply try to be sensible and wise, travel with people I trust, and have a plan if something does go wrong. I lived in fear for many years and I won t do it anymore.
Krista sorry to hear about your crazy experience, but glad that it all ended up as good as it did! This sentence: I lived in fear for many years and I won t do it anymore. is not only key to enjoying travel, but enjoying LIFE! People miss out on so much if they give into their fears.
Fantastic, yet depressing, read. There s so much literature in academic circles about this sort of thing: the risk society, and how attempts to mitigate risk end up putting us more at risk (whatever that means).
I can say with pretty high confidence, though, that many of the areas of Kenya (one of Africa travel agency manila philippines s bright spots, according to the Canadian government s outposts abroad!) are far safer than, say, Regina or Surrey. What terrifies me is that so many people accept the government travel advisories as indisputable facts about the situation on the ground. Sigh.
At the end of the day, staying safe abroad isn t something a government agency can really tell you how to do. It s something you have to figure out on your own, and, once you do, you realise that the world is a much more sane and safe place than we re ge

The last time the CDC issued spain rent a car a high-level warning spain rent a car was in 2003 because of a SARS outbreak in Asia. The World Health Organization, however, has not issued a similar travel warning for the West Africa region.
The current outbreak is the largest since the disease first emerged in Africa nearly 40 years ago. The virus is contagious and is spread by direct contact with blood or bodily spain rent a car fluids from a sick person. Ebola can’t be spread like flu through casual contact or breathing in the same air.
Experts estimate that in this outbreak, about 60 per cent of the people who have gotten sick with Ebola have died—a frightening fatality rate that is among the highest of any disease. There is no vaccine and no specific spain rent a car treatment.
The two American spain rent a car aid workers in Liberia diagnosed with Ebola are Dr. Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, who work for North Carolina-based aid groups. Writebol was getting an experimental treatment, spain rent a car the mission groups said Thursday.
“I remain hopeful and believing that Kent will be healed from this dreadful disease,” Brantly’s wife, Amber, said in a statement released spain rent a car by the aid group he works with, Samaritan’s Purse. She and the couple’s two young children left Liberia for Texas before her husband was infected, and she said they are fine.
At the White House, press secretary Josh Earnest said the U.S. was looking into options to bring the two workers back. While the U.S. would facilitate the trip, private companies would be used to transport them.
On Thursday afternoon, officials at Atlanta’s Emory University Hospital said they expected one of the Americans to be transferred there “within spain rent a car the next several days.” The hospital declined spain rent a car to identify which aid worker, citing privacy laws.
The CDC has about two dozen staffers in West Africa to help try to control the outbreak. Frieden said the CDC will send 50 more in the next month. CDC workers in Africa also are helping at airports to help screen passengers, he said.
The CDC has said the risk of the Ebola virus coming to the United States remains small. On Monday, the agency sent a health alert to U.S. doctors, stressing that they should ask about foreign travel by patients who come down with Ebola-like symptoms, including fever, headache, vomiting and diarrhea.
Even if someone infected with Ebola came to the U.S., the risk of an outbreak is considered very low, Frieden said. Patients are contagious only when they show symptoms, and U.S. hospitals are well equipped to isolate cases and control spread of the virus.
Frieden also noted that relatively few people travel from West Africa to the United States. He said about 10,000 travellers from those countries come to the United States in an average three- or four-month period, and most do not arrive on direct flights.
The CDC has staff at 20 U.S. airports and border crossings. They evaluate any travellers spain rent a car with signs of dangerous infectious diseases, spain rent a car and isolate them when necessary. The agency is prepared to increase that staffing if needed, he said.
