Today I took a highway bus from Tokyo to Nagoya. Traveling in Japan is always an experience in itself, so I thought it might make a fun post. This time I went with Willer Express . The company runs a bunch of routes throughout Japan, and they have an excellent English website. The prices are competitive, and they operate a diverse fleet of buses.
Some are bare bones, squeeze-as-many-seats-as-you-can-in-a-coach chicken economy rental cars buses (which are probably actually not too bad). At the other end are coaches with huge, plushy seats. Of course, the price bar moves from left to right as you go up in class.
I went with the "RELAX with personal monitor" bus, which had a couple economy rental cars of interesting features. The first is the personal "canopy." It folds up behind your seat, and you pull it to extend economy rental cars it over your head. Voila, private head cone.
You fly around economy rental cars picking up baby chickens, which you then deposit in some kind of safehouse. But don't be complacent! There are critters meandering about, and they'll end your righteous chickery right then and there with a touch of their ornery economy rental cars mitts.. Your other entertainment option is music.
The console has a library of relaxation inducing economy rental cars new age tunes like Southern Island and Up Draft (though one wonders if this title were chosen by a Japanese writer with other thoughts in mind). I started my hypnotic musac cruise with Coconut Shade of a Tree.
It's all very relaxy, but if you choose to listen to the beats while enjoying the privacy head canopy, you can't get down with the visual relaxation. economy rental cars It's all about personal choice. economy rental cars You make the call. Another nice feature: There's a power port (two prong), so you can juice up your electronic devices during the trip. Anyway, it was a 5.5 hour ride, and we stopped twice at rest stops. I had some surprisingly good cold soba in the Shizuoka area (I think that's where we were) - packaged up convenience store style, but maybe made by some nice seaside soba supplier. It was oishi. economy rental cars All in all, not a bad ride, and for 3500 yen, who could complain. My ride back on Sunday will be a bit more (4500 yen), so note that route prices aren't fixed. I think if you book further economy rental cars in advance you get slightly better rates. Plus there are other discounted rates available. So there you go. If you need to get from A to B in Japan, the highway buses are very popular (and a fraction of the cost of a shinkansen). You can even take overnight buses from point to point, which saves time and a night's accommodation. I can't promise you'll get a lot of sleep on the buses, but who knows - maybe a couple of games of Flicky followed by some Coconut Shade of a Tree under your personal head canopy is all you need for some easy z's as you're rollin' down the highway in Japan.

SUN CITY — Edward Synek was such a friendly bus driver that Sun City folks used to ride along just to talk with him. His wife, Joyce, joined in the social fun by bringing cookies from her oven and tomatoes from her garden to the riders.
For the last several four star hotels florence italy years of his life, Synek drove a senior bus for Grafton Township four star hotels florence italy that provided transportation to many Sun City residents that couldn t drive themselves. He shuttled them to doctor visits, shopping on Randall Road, trips to the food pantry, and to the hairdressers until his health began to fail about two years ago. He died from the effects of ALS (Lou Gehrig four star hotels florence italy s Disease) on July 31.
For 30 years, Synek owned and operated his own company, SignX, out of Cary. The company provided custom design, fabrication, and installation of distinctive commercial signs, along with vehicle lettering and outdoor lighting maintenance services.
He drove the bus on Mondays and Fridays," Joyce said. "He said it was the best thing he ever did. He would greet riders enthusiastically and engage them in friendly conversations about their lives and interests. Riders often stayed on the bus past their intended stops just to keep talking with him. Some just rode along with no intended destination just to be with him. He was the ultimate friendly bus driver."
Joyce added that after a while, she started riding along and distributing Christmas cookies to riders along with tomatoes. "I had several family members helping me with the cookies, and we d get on the bus and hand them out to riders," she said. "We were known as the cookie bus."

Are you traveling to London? airline ticket pricing Are you appalled by how much stronger the British pound is than the American dollar? (Maybe that's how Bush managed to keep Blair on his side.) Are you generally gob-smacked by the queen's airline ticket pricing ransom demanded airline ticket pricing by London hotels? Read on for my review of a place in London you may come to love, and not just because the price is right. Yes, for the sticker-shocked London visitor I might have something to soothe the nerves, a centrally-located London hotel that does not cost a fortune. Note "might." This is not the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park (nothing under $400 a night) or even the Marriott County Hall (a relative bargain starting at $300 a night). I've stayed at both and, while I can assure you that both offer superb service, I can't say they offer three to four times the value of the Morgan Hotel , currently airline ticket pricing one of the top ranked establishments at the very useful Trip Advisor . And while the Marriott and Mandarin have their own charm and gravitas and history, so does the Morgan. If you travel a lot you have probably figured out that a large element of hotel accommodation satisfaction rating is expectation management. Nowhere is this more true than in London, which offers a bewildering array of hotels, many of which charge exorbitant prices, and too many of which change hands more often than the English weather changes season. So what you can expect from the Morgan, a small, independent, family-run hotel in the heart of London? Number one: A very clean room that is small but well-appointed and well-serviced by a polite and cheerful staff. The ambiance is closer to that of a bed and breakfast than a big hotel. If this sounds appealing then the Morgan is a bargain, particularly for individuals for whom hanging out in the hotel is not a big part of the trip, like me when traveling to London on business. I probably airline ticket pricing wouldn't choose it for a honeymoon or a two week holiday with two kids in tow but it could be just the ticket if you're coming to London for a night or two at the theatre (and ideally located for such). I chose it for a calm retreat and good night's sleep at the end of a series of days spent visiting various client offices around London. I was not disappointed. What else can you expect? You can expect a relatively quiet night's sleep. The hotel is in a terrace of what were once houses but now are mainly offices, backing onto small gardens that in turn back onto the British Museum. Rooms at the back of the hotel are well-insulated from the sounds of Bloomsbury airline ticket pricing Street, which itself is not terribly airline ticket pricing noisy (nothing like the same amount of rowdy late night pedestrian traffic you get in Convent Garden just a few blocks away--and very handy if you're up for some night life). As with any hotel, noise in the rooms is relative to the number and demeanor of other guests (with the possible exception of the afore -mentioned Mandarin, probably the best insulated hotel I've experienced in Europe). I have certainly stayed in places that charge twice as much and have inferior sound insulation. Given the close proximity of the rooms at the Morgan, loutish guests or noisy early risers could be a problem, but I got the distinct impression that travelers who choose the Morgan are more than likely to be sensitive to its intimate ambiance and conduct themselves accordingly. (Conversely, I sense that some guests at more expensive hotels seem to think the queen's ransom they paid for a night's accommodation entitles them to be as loud as they like.) Traveling alone, the size of the room, and bed, was fine (and a couple who are very much in love should do fine as well). The TV was very small, but I wasn't there to be entertained. I only turned it on once, probably because I get most of my news from the 'net these days. Tasteful use of shelving and recessed lighting made the best of the room space. A small table and chairs provided a comfy place to sit and relax, airline ticket pricing read, or surf the Internet via the free wireless connection. I have stayed in two different rooms (202 and 206) and the bathrooms in both were small and shower-only, no tub--but very clean and recently upgraded with modern fittings. Soap and shampoo supplies were a bit basic but the towels were above average for a UK hotel (closer to good-old American cotton than traditional English sandpaper). Hair driers were installed in both rooms but no ironing board (I'm sure you could arrange the use of one if you wanted). There is individual room temperature control, including AC, a must for summer in London in the age of global warming. Of the two rooms, 206 was quieter. As far as my needs went, location was great. The only other hotel nearby, actually right across the street, airline ticket pricing is the Radisson Kenilworth . A lovely hotel but 166% more expensive last time I checked. The nearest tube is a short walk and you can stroll right into Convent Garden or onto Oxford Street in minutes. There is a Starbucks about two blocks in one direction, and a Costas is just around the corner. Finally, something airline ticket pricing very nice you can expect at the Morgan, and can depend on getting--if you get up before 9AM--is a fine English breakfast (cereal, juice, coffee/tea, toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, mushroom, tomato) dished up in a very smart dining room, cooked to order, and served with a smile. It was certainly a good way for me to start the day. So there you have it, and if you don't like it, don't go there. But if you go there knowing and liking what you read here, you will probably be satisfied. That seems to be the trick of it, especially if you read Trip Advisor. Note that some people went to the Morgan with expectations that were not met. That was hardly the hotel's fault. Folk who follow Web 2.0 trends might have spotted this aspect of "customer review" sites. You don't 'know' the person doing the reviewing. You have to deduce their character from their articulation. airline ticket pricing Some reviews are really airline ticket pricing gripes and some are clearly unfair. On the other hand, if you read these reviews you can adjust your expectations and decide if a place if right for you. And one final note for e-commerce analysts: This hotel ranks near the top of its class on a very popular travel site and it doesn't take online reservations. you have to use email, fax, or phone.

At the height of the recession in 2010, in a city with no shortage of restaurants, hotels, or combinations of the two, King Grove launched its first hotel: Ruschmeyer's gateway golf tour in Montauk, New York. Turned off by the ultra-chic (but ultimately cold) boutique hotel trend of the '90s, King Grove founder gateway golf tour Ben Pundole wanted to create something different -- a new breed of lifestyle hotel that focused on immersive service, progressive design, and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. In short, he wanted to put real hospitality back in the hospitality business. Pundole wasn't always calling all the shots, though. The creative force behind King Grove got his start as a cellarman at the Groucho Club in London at age 19. I recently sat down with him at Soho House in Manhattan to discuss his rise through gateway golf tour the hospitality gateway golf tour ranks, and how he made the leap to being a full-fledged entrepreneur. Never one to put on airs, Pundole immediately took note of our wobbly table and dropped to his hands and knees to fix it. Hospitality is in his blood, which became even more apparent as we dove into the real secrets behind King Grove's success.
What is a "lifestyle hotel" exactly? I think a lifestyle hotel encompasses many things, the most important being an accessible and approachable nature. With King Grove, we've tried to represent a focus on design, but not one that overpowers the operation, honest and aspiring food and beverage programs, and a nightlife component but certainly not one that's at the forefront. We'll always include children's programs as well as health and wellness offerings; but, that said, we're not trying to be all things to all people. You went from being a cellarman at the Groucho club in London to VP of Marketing Entertainment at the Morgan s Hotel Group and finally the founder of King and Grove. gateway golf tour How did you make it happen?
I've never really had a goal in mind. I think my career has been strangely cyclical because I started out with humble beginnings, simply out of necessity, and now I've come back to try and project some of that authentic hospitality out of desire.
gateway golf tour After 11 years with Schrager, I figured out exactly what I didn't want to do, but was still figuring out what it was that I wanted to do. I collected notes, recorded ideas, gateway golf tour was always ripping out pages from magazines -- everything from interviews to interior design and recipes -- and I was always studying blogs, galleries, and museums. I've been researching food and hospitality gateway golf tour my entire life. If I wasn't in hotels, I always thought that I would be a good gallerist. I'm quite interested in the art world -- my family in Mumbai has a contemporary art gallery -- and I always thought it encompassed everything I'm passionate about: design, hospitality, and salesmanship. I continued my life in hospitality instead, but it's the curation of people s experiences that inspired me to start my own line. When I was very young my father had a small hotel in a place called Norfolk in London. He was also the chef of the hotel, and I was always fascinated about how he could curate people gateway golf tour s experiences and I loved that.
I started out with humble beginnings, simply out of necessity, and now I ve come back to try and project some of that authentic hospitality out of desire. You left Morgan's in 2010 at the height of the recession and after a recent promotion. How did you know the time was right? Honestly? I went with my gut, which I don't recommend doing, but that's what happened. How did the recession affect your plans?
I think that the menu structure is a lot more accessible and approachable -- it represents a much more easily shared menu, easily held, made out of cardboard, pinned together with bulldog gateway golf tour clips we don't want to be too extereme on either end (i.e. just handing people a piece of paper or a leather bound book). You've been known to speak out against the trendy nature of boutique hotels and even the word itself, why is that? Boutique hotels appealed to my generation when we were growing up because they were new. They were these arenas of bewilderment and modernism, and I think a lot of the time they were very much design-driven and that impressed people. They certainly took precedence over traditional hotels with the creative set. And then as with most things, the creative set longed gateway golf tour for more: more context, more depth, and more tradition gateway golf tour which boutique hotels didn't have. Everyone who opened a hotel thought that to be successful in the boutique world you had to hire some starchitect which didn't actually help the hotels run better. In fact, this hindered their ability to run effectively. We've avoided this by looking to see how we can best use each space in a welcoming and engaging way rather than simply worrying about how we can impress people.
When you were ready to launch King Grove, how did your financing and initial team come together? Rob McKinley [Pundole's business partner at the time] and I sought some advice from Morgan's ex-CEO, Ed Sheetz, who was also Ian Schrager's financial partner, and very bluntly his advice gateway golf tour was "partner with me and let's do it properly." So, we were very fortunate in that sense, it was because of Ed's help that we got our start. What happened to Rob? His involvement seems to have shifted since King Grove first started. I remember reading that the name "King Grove" was based off of your respective childhood streets. Rob is an artist and a designer and didn't want to commit to a more corporate life. Working closely with a partner is very difficult gateway golf tour with diverse personalities and physical space. You have to weigh up how you want to prioritize your working future. gateway golf tour Rob is still very involved, but in a different way he leads all of the interior design and d cor for each property.
Also, I would never advise anybody ever to get a real corporate office it doesn t work and it s counter-productive. What are your offices like? They're like that [smiles]. And it doesn't work, but we're going to be changing them thankfully.
What would your dream creative environment be? I think there would be a screening room, ping-pong table, planned workshops and real creative brainstorming sessions and service training sessions. Sitting people in a boring old office is never going to work. Each King Grove location involves the transformation of a pre-existing hotel. I can't even imagine how many construction and design hindrances must come up along the way. How do you deal with setbacks?
We have to keep an open mind, that's for sure. When we purchased gateway golf tour Ruschmeyer's, there was a pool that we were excited to restore. The previous owner had filled it in and when we looked into making it functional, we realized just how badly it had been damaged and there was no way we could salvage it. So, we turned it into a sandy beer garden with bocce ball, ping-pong, and bleachers around the edges. It actually ended up being even better than a pool, and more unique. The bones of the building, the location, an understanding of the market gateway golf tour we take all of those things into consideration when we open a new hotel. You have to. Otherwise you're the DJ at a party playing music to yourself.
So what's next? Our next property, Hotel Williamsburg, opens at the beginning of March and will offer a similar experience to that of Ruschmeyer's, it will be an urban retreat. We'll cater to the global culturati that's looking for something new, but we will also target gateway golf tour the parents of people who live in the neighborhood and need a place to stay when they visit their kids. The last thing I want to do is open up a hipster hotel, but there are six tennis courts across the street from us, so we're going to provide tennis kits and there's also a park nearby, so we re going to pack picnic lunches for guests. As we do with each of our properties, we're going to make sure that the check-in process is very well-done and that the service philosophy is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. After Williamsburg our next hotel will be in L.A. There's no shortage of hotels in NYC. How will Hotel Williamsburg different?
Historically, any downturn in the economy presents new opportunities. It almost recalibrates people's way of thinking, and I think the emergence of so many gastropubs, accessible/approachable restaurants, a kind of hankering for homegrown or locally grown or organically grown there's a certain gateway golf tour honesty and authenticity that people after any economic downturn respond to well again. gateway golf tour How do you keep each property fresh and relevant once it's up and running?
That's the hardest part. Our approach is all about continual cultural programming across gateway golf tour the board. Seeking out the right partnerships, training and retraining the staff, and hosting the right events. How do you manage a creative team on a global scale? What do you look for when you hire? We hire people gateway golf tour with similar ideas. From the chef to our creative gateway golf tour director, to the interior design team to me, we all need to think alike in order for this to work. I would rather not look at someone's resume until I've spoken with him or her. If they have the same philosophy about hospitality and hotels then we check to see if they have the technical skills to back it up. In my opinion, the technical side of something can usually be taught, whereas the philosophy can't. What advice would you share with aspiring entrepreneurs? You have to separate life and work and create a balance. No one is going to give you points for working all hours that God sends.
