We are a travel loving family of 5 about to leave for a month in an RV. So excited but a little nervous since it’s our first big trip with our youngest daughter who is 13 months old. I was wondering if you have driven to Canada with your little guy and if he needed a passport for that? We plan on spending two weeks in Canada during our trip and it will be our kiddos first trip out of the country so they don’t have passports, but I had read that under 15 years old they don’t need them for road travel… but I have heard that Canada canadian car rentals border control can be strict. ~Tamie
How exciting! I would love to get a vintage RV and hit the road with my family one summer. Sque! The last time I ve been to Canada was prior to the crackdown on travel documents due to events that shall not be named. It was after 2001 and before securities went into crazy must check all the panties mode. While you are there, visit Niagra-on-the-Lake. I LOVE that town!
Travel documents are required for United States citizens but Passport BOOKS are NOT needed for crossing into Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean or the Bahamas by land (where applicable, obviously) or sea BUT Passport CARDS are for all citizens regardless of age. Yes, even minors even your newborn. If you are flying into these countries, you ll need the tradition Passport book. The good news is that they are loads cheaper than passport books: $55 for first time adults applicants and $40 for kids under 16 versus books which are $165 and $105 respectively at the time of this blog post.
You can apply for passport books and cards locally, you can find out more about what to expect during the application process here. If you have questions about passport photos, check out a few of I Heart Family canadian car rentals Travel’s articles:
