Hello All, I can't access my old username so posting as a guest. We're planning a trip next summer airline discounts for military to Europe (me, DH and DD, who will be 4y3m then). Landing in Berlin and we want to rent a car at the airport for a week (spend 1 day in Germany sightseeing, then drive to visit my family in Poland - about 2 hours trip). I've looked around a bit and saw that it's possible to rent a car WITH a car seat 9-18 kg which would be a 5 point harness convertible seat? Is it right? I know Europeans have different car safety regulations airline discounts for military lol but there is no wah I'm puuting my DD in anything else than a HHB or a convertible at this point... At home we have the nautilus (main) and safety 1st avenue as a travel seat. The avenue airline discounts for military I took with us traveling overseas when she was 2.5 - only to use on the airplane, my fam picked us up and they borrowed a carseat for transportation. But now we want to rent the car and make it into more of a trip... What would you do? I don't want to use the seat on the airplane (was thinking of CARES instead - she is a peanut, only 27-28 lbs and 37 . Should we take our travel seat and gate check it? Can we use it in an European car without a problem? Maybe we should trade in the safety 1st for an evenflo maestro? We could use another airline discounts for military seat for DH's car. Sorry for so many questions but I want to be prepared in advance!! TIA!!
If you rent a car and tell them your child is 4 you will get a booster. No doubt about that. It's pretty typical to booster in Europe after 13 kg. but practice airline discounts for military aside, I'd not want to risk renting seats with an unknown history.
Thank you. The problem is, we need to drive for 2-2.5 hours from Berlin to Poland most on the highways and she is a small child, might not even reach much more over the needed 30 lbs for the RSTV vest... Is there a seat (FF) that can be used without the top tether? That is the problem right, no top tether in the European cars? The Euro seats don't use the top tether?
Few Euro seats have top tethers. Then again very, very few may be installed with lap belt only while forward facing, and many have a high belt path where for seatbelt's shoulder portion, or a support airline discounts for military leg.
No the euro seats do not require a TT as most EU cars do not have the anchors. Also, there are no HWH seats past 18kg besides the britax two way elite which harnesses to 25kg. I believe a couple more are about to hit the market though.
I'm sure someone more versed in American seats can chime in on the TT issue. I think there are some that do not require it for FF install although I think it is always highly recommended. I really really dislike the avenue install do only used it RF between 12m-3y then started using an RSTV.
Since the OP said she is renting a car, it should be a safe bet (note: should ) that the car will be 2011 or newer. One does not generally receive a rental car older than the previous year's model or so, and if TT points became standard with model year 2011, then it *should* be okay from that angle. airline discounts for military (Not guarantees on anything, of course.)
It's been five years since we lived in Germany, but all the cars we had (we had a long-term rental, but had to switch cars every so often so as to not run up the mileage too much on any one car - we drove 20,000 km in six months!) had TAs. We rented through Sixt, and had either VW or Audi. Last time we all visited, we had a Merc, but bought a Euro seat (which my nephew has since been enjoying) for my oldest so I don't recall whether there was a TA available.
