Call around directly to the locations. Don't use the 800 number. Consider booking off site from the airport. It was a bit tedious, but last time we traveled dh took a cab to a location a few miles away from the airport while I waited at the airport with the kids. He came back and got us. Saved several hundred dollars (spring break week in Orlando). One time we all took the subway together in the bay area and picked up our car at a downtown location. Again we saved big $ over the airport travel home business price. You pay a premium on convenience. travel home business Btw, both times we were able to call and get the drop off location switched to the airport travel home business and did not incur a penalty!
lol--that's part of why i'm doing this so early. last trip i thought i had booked the car when i did the flight, and i hadn't. i realized this about 2 days before the flight but i don't think i paid a crazy amount. but i was in a huge panic!
We flew into Denver ~2 years ago, and the Denver airport is VERY expensive for car rentals. It was cheaper to pay for an airport shuttle (round trip) to an off-site car rental place. It's certainly less convenient (we have 2 young kids), travel home business but to me it was worth it to save several hundred dollars. I guess they have more taxes/fees at that airport or something because I have checked other cities and found airport and off-site rentals to be similarly priced. I remember looking on Fodor's web site, where other people also commented on the price of Denver car rentals.
BTW, I don't know if you have been to that area before or not, but there is a very nice zoo in Colorado Springs - Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. You can feed giraffes, they have pony rides, and it is really just a beautiful travel home business zoo - built into a mountainside. We liked it better than Denver's zoo (which was nice also).
