Whenever I rent a car, I carry this neat little kit I bought in Canada for about 30 canuck bucks last time I was there. Some dork had opened his door onto the pristine white side panel of the rental car I was driving, leaving a noticeable dent. The kit is basically an electric glue gun, a suction-cup device, and a small bottle of alcohol. You clean the dent thoroughly with alcohol, let the gun warm up, splooge some plastic goo on it, let it dry a bit, then apply the suction cup device to the glue. The dent pops out no problem. I'll go post a link later - if I find one -if you've never heard of this device.
Are you not entitled to three quotations for the work done. I would also ask to be provided with the workshop reciepts including time and materials. you're right about the Lufthansa M M card, but the insurance cover only comes with the Business card which costs 95 euro a year. But even if you only rent one car per year, the amount you save on insurance usually pays for that right there.
I think the rental companies take real advantage when it comes to nicks, scrapes etc. I had a tiny stone chip in a windshield in a Budget Rent-a-car vehicle I rented for a month in Canada a couple of summers ago. I wanted to get the whole windshield replaced, and went to three separate glass shops. Each owner told me that there was no way that for a stone chip this well-known company would charge me for a replacement windshield, so I had the glass repaired instead.
Well, turns out they not only charged me 600 bucks for the windshield, that price was as much as 60% more than one of the prices I was quoted to get the work done in a shop on my own time. The thing they take advantage of is the fact they know you aren't going to be around to fight it, you're leaving to go back home or wherever, and they already have your credit card number. It's a racket. I am willing to bet they didn't even bother replacing the windshield.
