We recently published some travel tips for single female travellers and promised that we d do something similar for our male readers/ travellers. So as promised here it is - we’ve done a little research and asked some of our solo traveller friends for their most important tips for single male travellers and condensed them here for your enjoyment.
This is somewhat universal but nonetheless important. Be aware of your surroundings at all time. Be present in every moment and stay alert. To help, perhaps consider wearing trousers with a zipped pocket inside for keeping valuables.
Risk taking can be thrilling but don t just push your boundaries blindly hoping for the best. Try new things certainly, but don t say yes to anything you feel completely uncomfortable with. Know your limits. For example if you re visiting Asia and feel compelled to hire a motorbike don t do it if you ve never ridden one before.
Don t take unregistered taxis yep you re a man and you can look after yourself .but can you? Calling a licensed cab company (especially) when commuting at night can save you from becoming a victim of theft or assault - it isn t just women who are risk. This is true especially in developing countries, seedy drivers sometimes plan with a group of cohorts to detain their vehicle on a private stretch of road. Never get into a taxi if your intuition tells you not to.
This is generally aimed at the younger audience but it s valuable to remember no matter what/ who you are. Remember to stay in control drink if you want to but don t over do it especially if you re with a group of people you don t know or in a strange place. If you lose control due to drinking or taking drugs then you make yourself vulnerable you could get lost you could be easily taken advantage of and you ll no doubt have a massive hangover and miss an entire day of adventure!
This one is a hard one as not everyone is aware of themselves. Try to be self aware especially when travelling solo! Try not to be intimidating – don t stare for prolonged periods, and understand that you might not be as approachable as others - especially if you’re a big guy, so try to be gentle, warm and welcoming. If you re in a country such as Thailand then remember to keep your cool don t show your anger and try not to get irate if you have a problem, then sort it our amicably.
This only really could be a worry for single backpackers and single men travelling on a budget. But if you opt to stay in hostels with shared rooms then be aware that some hostels are co-ed, so you might be staying in the same room with female travellers. Check ahead or ask the manager about room arrangements if you prefer to secure a bed in an all-male dorm.
This is universal and completely unavoidable! Don’t be afraid to chat to strangers, to make new friends and to even to travel with those new friends. Sometimes travelling as a single is about alone time but it’s also good to dive into conversation with someone new. Regardless of whether you are staying in a simple hostel or staying in a beautiful hotel as part of a singles holiday, it s a good idea to spend some time in the lounge or hotel bar if you are looking to meet new people of course it s much easier when you re on a singles tour or holiday, but if you are backpacking, or just travelling the world alone remember meeting new people can be a perfect way to enhance your adventure.
