Thanks to NDA nonsense I can't talk about the hands-on I just had with Mass Effect - the upcoming RPG from the Baldur's san francisco international airport car rentals Gate/KOTOR creators san francisco international airport car rentals Bioware - until later in the month. Bah. That means I can't talk about the wonderful character san francisco international airport car rentals models - Mass Effect's facial expressions are the most realistic san francisco international airport car rentals I've ever seen - or the synth-tastic music. Or even the fact that I am now looking forward to this game more than any other this year.
But back to the music for a second. Mass Effect's san francisco international airport car rentals soundtrack - the bleeps and strings were reminiscent of Blade Runner era Vangelis - really added an edge to the sci-fi adventuring. And anyone who has played Bioshock will know how important decent audio can be. But with most games you get the impression that the sound is simply not as important in the development process as the graphics or physics engines. Fine back in the day but not when many players have 5.1 surround systems and correspondingly higher expectations. san francisco international airport car rentals Heck, it's Wednesday san francisco international airport car rentals - what are your top 3 gaming sound experiences (soundtrack, fx or both). Mine?
1: GTA: Vice City - Blondie san francisco international airport car rentals and Human League while riding into the neon sunset.. 2: Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) - hummable tunes plus ocarina on a joypad .. 3: Mass Effect (Xbox 360) - analogue synths and 80's sci-fi electronica - what's not to love?
I dont know about top 3 but my number 1 would be the sfx in System Shock 2. From the screaming Psy monkeys to the cries of "I'm sorry!" and the insane robot nurses. It's just brilliant. The game wouldn't have been half as creepy if they'd just relied on the graphics.
Silent Hill (My favourite, SH2). The soundscape (isn't it called "foley"?) in the game is unrivalled in the survival horror genre. The mix of haunting industrial music and primeval auditory fear cues make this endlessly absorbing. My girlfiend absolutely will not stay in the room when the music comes on; regardless of what's going on visually.
Bioshock: san francisco international airport car rentals I think we can all agree on this one. I just got to a point in the game when Billie Holiday's 'God bless the child' song is playing. Perfectly judged. san francisco international airport car rentals I really san francisco international airport car rentals hope games start to include more thoughtful san francisco international airport car rentals use of real life music in games. Just think what the film Goodfellas would be like if it didn't have any period songs.
just for the joys of hitting the green blobs - "Extra Time" - and red blobs - "Tuuurrrrrboo" - on the road. Oh, and going underneath articulated lorries on the last leg gave you a big "Yaaaaaa-hoooo".
the voice effects doing the Terrorist Hunts are absolutely brilliant, as is the ocassional joy of lobbing an incendiary at someone in border town and hear them scream "Ai Ai Ai Ai Ai" in a steroetypical mexican/latin american fashion.
The opening arpeggios of the Final Fantasy theme are instantly recognisable and ace. And I think the fanfare for winning a battle (from 7 onwards) will be in my head forever. san francisco international airport car rentals The music for Super Mario World was brilliant too, especially the echo-y cave tunes.
I know we're not strictly talking about voice acting, but I thought The Darkness was excellent on that score. I haven't felt more attached to a character than I did for the characters in that game, and it was thanks to the acting really.
I loved the voice acting and orchestral soundtrack in Dragon Quest 8. They made a real effort with that game to get the (mostly British) voices san francisco international airport car rentals really well suited san francisco international airport car rentals to the characters, which added so much to the experiance.
Chronotrigger, Final Fantasy 6/7, Bioshock, the 3d GTA's, Katamari and the usual classics mentioned above. Defcon deserves a special san francisco international airport car rentals mention though. san francisco international airport car rentals For such an abstract game the soundtrack conveys the unspeakable horror of global thermonuclear war.
Someone mentioned Xenon 2! i beleive the choons on that were from Bomb the Bass...hwicked...it reminds me of an amiga shooter called san francisco international airport car rentals blood money...i beleive it had a good soundtrack but can't really remember (can't have been that good)
And Hitman...some great tracks over the years, quality is up and down but that Jesper Kyd guy has produced a couple of stonkers, i seem to remember the opening mission on Hitman 2 had a great sound, like old skool godfather style stuff but with a few electronic bits to bring it up to date..
God of War / God of War 2 - probably some of the best soundtrack san francisco international airport car rentals writing in gaming. Plenty of games have great tunes accompanying them, but the music in God of War complements Kratos' torment and violence brilliantly.
But also Wargasm! Barrelling san francisco international airport car rentals round in a big fat tank shooting other tanks to storming classical san francisco international airport car rentals music was ace, it really made you feel like you were in a huge budget war film. Especially Verdi's Dies Irae...
I can't help but think of menu music, though, which acts as a form of musical cue rather than a soundtrack either because it doesn't stick around or, perversely, I choose to switch it off. So, for example, san francisco international airport car rentals the music from the Sensible Soccer games (pretty much all of them), Pinball san francisco international airport car rentals Fantasies, san francisco international airport car rentals Project Gotham Racing 2 and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. They're all games that I spent ages playing, and so the menu music is associated with the enjoyment of playing them.
Apidya was tops...this is going to make me sound incredibly stupid but the praying mantis boss (1st boss) was the first time i'd seen a mantis...see games are educational after all (if you're very stupid to begin with)
Recent: Personal MP3s on Project Gotham Racing. I love Chemical Brother tunes, like It Came From Afrika. The intro starts as the 3.2.1 countdown goes, GO!, you rise through the gears, san francisco international airport car rentals gaining speed, the tune reaches a peak, and *swerve* through the corner...
san francisco international airport car rentals 2) Outcast - played by the Moscow(?) Symphony Orchestra, wasn't san francisco international airport car rentals it? Big, sweeping strings perfectly set up the epic scope of the piece (and as for the victory dance at the end - what could be more perfect?)
What about Turrican on the Amiga? I use to blast that thing through my stereo, great crazy synth score. i remember i used to like the music, or the ambient sound effects when DOOM came out to, very atmospheric, hadn't really heard anything like it before.
