I have seen $1 a day and often also a petrol allowance on offer from time to time with www.standbycars.com.au , in fact they have some now at that rate for BNE to SYD, but they only give your three days or so, still not a bad deal!

There used to be a rort where rental companies (and also some leasing companies/fleet managers) would register cars in cheaper states for registration, but then move the cars to other states to live.

I think this has been dealt with by the various registration organisations though - so most cars will now be registered correctly in the states where they are rented. Hmmm. My current Hertz rental car in Melbourne airline tickets cheap has Queensland number plates....

Used to wonder why i got a WA plated airline tickets cheap car most times I rented from a certain no birds rental company in th cross when they did not allow thier cars to be taken interstate, especialy when I once got a car with WA plates and 10 km's on it!
