Well there are a lot of factors that go into a vacation. If you are going by plane, staying at a hotel
We really, really want to bring C to Disney for his 3rd birthday next year. Its also where we did our honeymoon, so it would be a fun 4th anniversary trip. Plus, if we check in before he actually turns three, he's still free! Mwahahaha
Anyway, the reason why we're thinking about this now is because its going to be hella expensive. We've never done a big vacation like this (our honeymoon was a gift) so I have no idea how much we should hawaiian island cruises budget for. Looking at the Disney Vacation website, it seems like hotel, food, park tickets, etc. will set us back about $1800. Then there is gas and souvenirs. Is that normal? Am I cheap? lol
Honestly, it all depends on what you can afford and what your priorities for spending are. For example, I tend to prioritize experiences like travel and local outings over "stuff," so we probably spend more on average on those things, but I drive a crappy old car and we have a super-tiny house. ... But I'm probably going to have to buy a new car soon, so that's going to cut into our vacation budget for next year, which I'm pretty sad about.
When we went to Disney pre-kid we shared a condo with some friends that had a pool (it's amazing to have your own pool!) and it was around $2,000 plus food and travel expenses so i'd add another 1,000 to that. And always save more than you'll need so that way if you have anything left over you can put it towards hawaiian island cruises your next vaca!
Well there are a lot of factors that go into a vacation. If you are going by plane, staying at a hotel, renting a car and how many people are going.I can't just give a number since there is so much to consider.
I'd book it and not think twice about it. We usually do one or two big vacations (theme parks, cruise, beaches, ect.) and a few small getaways (camping, visiting relatives) so DH automatically has money set aside for that each week. We both grew up in families that vacationed a lot so I think that it's more normal/expected to us to do it as a family now.
That also sounds like a great time to go. DS1 still talks about his trip to Sesame Place when he was 2.5 so I think C will love it and remember it for a while. Plus, with the huge bonus of him being free (if you go early enough) and it being an anniversary trip as well, I think it'd be perfect.
I think when I have looked it up its about the same. I want to go to Disney too. If this year works out, then we will be there for T's 3rd birthday. We were suppose to go in 2010 for NewYears, however I was pregnant and was on bed rest, so that was a no go, and then we were planned for T's 2nd birthday, but my SIL is due in October and they don't want to take a new baby. So we are hoping next year. However we are currently TTCing. so heres hoping the 3rd time is the charm on getting us to Disney.
But honestly, my parents have stated that it is a lot more expensive now to go there. We use to go every year growing up, and now that there are some grandkids my parents want to start going again. Time to start saving those pennies.
hawaiian island cruises I am super frugal, but for Disney I'd expect to spend between $2,000 and $2,500. I'd go with the meal plan and park hopper, and stay at Pop Century to save money. We stayed there and it was pretty close to Hollywood Studios park, which is my favorite. I think our trip a few years ago was about $2,000 for 6 nights, 7 days.
For us, Disney hawaiian island cruises only happens once every 5 years or so, so we are good splurging when we go. We also never really do vacations other than that, unless we are going to a cabin which costs about $50 a person for an entire weekend.
For a big family vacation, I'm guessing $10k. I only say that b/c we've been thinking about a big Disney trip for K for his 5th birthday and plan on over-paying for just about everything We'll do another big vacation at 10, probably.
I totally agree with GG that we prioritize vacations. Part of the reason we've always chosen to have a smaller mortgage, etc. So, I think 2000+ is what I'd plan for. And then I'd look for coupons and deals like crazy, lol!
We haven't even really thought much about doing Disney or something like that yet, have not done a vacation that costs money with the kids yet. It is going to be crazy expensive for 6 people. We will probably do it around tax refund time and use that to pay for it, but it is at least another year if not two off for us. If it is going to cost that much we want the kids old enough to be able to enjoy the rides and remember the trip since we won't be going often.
We have always spent quite a bit of money on vacations. It's important to us and neither H nor I have expensive hobbies, we don't buy much in the way of things or clothes for ourselves, so vacation was always where we splurged.
We just did a long weekend trip out of state to visit some friends earlier hawaiian island cruises this year and it was $1,000 and we didn't have any hotel costs since we stayed at their house (but we had airfare, going out to eat, activities, etc).
That seems pretty reasonable! You can find good deals if you look around too. DH and I went when we were still dating and we did our usual vacation money saving thing. We took all our own food and only ate out twice the entire stay. We had peanut butter sandwiches hawaiian island cruises for lunch everyday, etc. We stayed a little further away from Disney and drove to the park. We stay at Super8 every time we go somewhere. It's cheap, has free breakfast, and honestly, is clean and just like a fancy hotel to us. Hotels have a bed, microwave, tub --- no need to spend a lot. When we use cheap hotels, we can also get the "suite", which has been nice with Nate. It has a couch/living area, fridge, microwave, hawaiian island cruises etc. I think you can have a blast without spending a lot!
$1800 is in the realm of a "big trip" for us. I don't think we've ever spent that much. Sure, $1800 is a lot to spend on a vacation, but if you are cheap like me, you won't be planning a "big trip" like that every year, nor probably even every other year. I say go if you can afford it!
Does Disney allow you to take food in with you? If so, you could get a soft-sided backpack cooler and take in sandwiches, hawaiian island cruises drinks, etc. There are all kinds of ways to cut back/save money on a trip, and I would be surprised if you couldn't find some tips and tricks online from other "cheapos" like us about doing Disney on-the-cheap.
I think between 2-3K is pretty good for disney, especially if you are going to be there multiple days/multiple parks. I would budget for high cost but then when picking stuff go cheaper so you wont reach your max. We have always stayed off Disney property in order to save $$ and with little ones I don't expect to be there from when the park opens til it closes, so we usually figure we will do dinner outside the park and if our place comes with fridge/stove like some of the vacation rentals or timeshares do rather than a typical hotel then we usually hawaiian island cruises will have food/ make our own dinner there, or eat dinner at cheaper locations. We live on the west coast so its disneyland for us, but BIL and old school friends of DH live in southern cal and they get discounts so we usually ask him or one of my H's friends to buy our tickets and we reimburse the cost, but definitely scope out specials and deals. We are hoping to go for A's 2 year birthday (but go in January). Have fun! we definitely belong in the park of splurging for vacations since we don't go often.
We are going and will pay 1600 and that is for 5 nights and 3 days for the parks. DH went to Bass Pro Shop and signed up and we have to do a presentation down there, but that was for all 4 since M is free. Check it out!
