Several months ago, social seating took flight. KLM began allowing customers to link their social network profiles – on FaceBook and LinkedIn – with the airline's seat maps through a programme called "Meet Seat". And airBaltic started working with social seating company Satisfly, which unlike Meet Seat conducts the research and seat mate selection for each passenger.
But a new player has entered the game. SeatID, which is now available on Ukrainian carrier AeroSvit, adventure travel alaska is looking to put its own spin on social seating – and turn the concept into a natural part of the airline passenger experience.
With SeatID, passengers still link their Facebook, Linkedin (or Twitter) adventure travel alaska accounts, which provide all the information necessary for them to be paired with another passenger. But according to SeatID co-founder and CEO Eran Savir, that's where the similarities end between SeatID and its competitors.
At present, social seating solutions work with airline partners that have signed up for the service. SeatID is looking adventure travel alaska to take the airline partner link out of the equation, and implement its system on every airline via a major online travel adventure travel alaska agent (OTA).
By skipping over individual airline agreements and going straight to an OTA, SeatID would be available on any airline that is partnered with that site. "You will be able to use SeatID, and the other users who have used that booking site and use SeatID will be able to see you, and you will be able to see them," says Savir.
To work around the issue of booking without SeatID, Savir says, "There might be something that we will add in the future. We will probably start with something like integration with TripIt, which could pull all your information automatically into our system At the moment, our focus is to get to those places where most users book flights and have the information right into the system automatically."
With the addition of another player on the social media field, will passengers really adventure travel alaska want to take the time to sign up for yet another system? "The end users experience with SeatID does not require any sign up," stresses Savir. "SeatID is integrated in a way that you will not feel. If you go to AeroSvit, you will see that you opt-in to Facebook, and then you continue purchasing the ticket the same as you would without SeatID."
Unlike Satisfly, there is no formal sign-up procedure. Savir believes adventure travel alaska a sign-up lowers the bar to entry. And there are other differences. "With [Satisfly], you log into the site with one of your profiles, define your mood, and then the system will choose a seat for you, next to someone who is a potential match. What we are doing is totally different, adventure travel alaska and in fact, it's the opposite way. We will show you the info and let you chose based on that info; we will not chose your seat mate for you," says Savir.
Many people are wary of sharing their personal information on the Internet, and others adventure travel alaska simply have no interest in the idea of social seating. Since launching adventure travel alaska with airBaltic, Satisfly has yet to announce another partner airline. In a November 2012 article in the Chicago Tribune , KLM said that 10,000 passengers had used its Meet Seat programme.
Meanwhile, more and more US airlines are offering extra legroom and 'preferred' economy seating options such as the exit row to further drive ancillary revenue streams, and provide greater options to travellers. Is social adventure travel alaska seating appealing enough to make passengers adventure travel alaska think about their seat mate experience over their choice of preferred seats? Will the ease of SeatID, which only requires a social network opt-in, be enough to attract passengers? Only time will tell us if SeatID has found the right formula for success.
