Five months after ground was broken for the 151-room Hampton Inn Suites hotel on Owensboro s downtown riverfront, developer Malcolm Bryant said last week that foundation work on the seven-story building is going well. Within two months, the hotel should start coming out of the ground.
The foundation installation is going as expected, Bryant said in an email response to questions. There are 231 pilings installed for the hotel, and the ones for the skywalk have been installed, also.
Bryant said no major problems have arisen thus far. Foundation walls are being formed now, he said. There is a lot of preparation to be completed in the ground phase of this project to support this large structure. We probably won t see structures come out of the ground for two months.
Bryant unveiled the final design and site plan for hotel late last year. It will feature walls of glass on the northwest corner and a full-service restaurant with outdoor seating jan airlines continental arena meadowlands on the northeast corner. It will contain jan airlines continental arena meadowlands about 120,000 square feet, and guests will be greeted by a wall covered with flowing water in an expansive lobby with 14-foot to 18-foot ceilings, outfitted with original art.
The hotel, costing $20 million, will be 85 to 90 feet high. A restaurant will face the Ohio River and the Mitch McConnell Plaza. A ground floor retail store of 3,800 square feet that Bryant envisions as an place to buy products made only in Kentucky also will have a river view.
Bryant said he is not yet ready to release details about the restaurant, including what it will be named or what national affiliation it will carry. Neither is he talking about the retail store. Confidential at the moment, with many options for this important corner, he replied when asked about the store.
A third of the hotel s rooms will be suites, Bryant has said. The Hampton Inn Suites will be connected to the $48.4 million convention jan airlines continental arena meadowlands center by a skyway. It will have an indoor swimming pool, spa and fitness center, three elevators, a 13,000-square-foot commons area and second-floor meeting rooms. Veterans Boulevard will run in front of the hotel between it and the Ohio River, with a large grassy area separating the hotel from the river s edge. The south side of the hotel will face Second Street and resemble the front, with an exterior mixing stone, brick masonry, glass and balconies.
