South Coast Folk Society holds a contra dance on the 2nd Saturday of each month (exception May will be 2nd Sat) at 7:00 at the Greenacres Grange between Coos Bay and Coquille. No partner or experience needed. All dances are taught by a caller; always live music. Contra dancing is an energetic couples line dance rooted in old English country dancing and performed with live music to the instructions of a caller. All dances are taught. This is an easy-to-learn and forgiving dance form suitable for ages 9 to 90, offered in a spirit of community. Instruction for beginners starts at 7:00 PM. Visitors to the Coos Historical Maritime Museum gain a perspective on the diverse and challenging history of Oregon s South Coast thorough rare artifacts and images, including items associated with the Coos and Coquille Indians, and with later coal miners, loggers, ranchers, and shipbuilders. Local shipwrecks are chronicled, along with frequently changed exhibits on a wide variety of topics from pre-history to the present. The museum boasts more than 250,000 historic photographs (reproductions are available) and more than 40,000 artifacts.
