A controversial new artwork by artist Michael Heizer was unveiled last week at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to crowds of over 1,000 spectators. Named "Levitated Mass", the new work is of a massive rock suspended over a walkway and weighs an enormous 340 tons. Designed to appear as if floating in space, the view from the walkway underneath Levitated Mass is something of an optical allusion; allowing the spectator to take in the imposing artwork form a new perspective. Thankfully, the piece is intended to remain as a permanent fixture at the museum, probably just as much for the immense difficulty it took to get the boulder into position as well as the merit of the work itself. In fact, the rock made a journey of 105 miles on a special trailer to get in over to the site, travelling at an average speed of 5mph. It has taken Heizer since 1969 to locate the perfect victoria seaside inn rock for this piece which he only found around seven year ago in a quarry in Riverside County, California. As a thank you to the inhabitants of the 22 towns which endured the rock's slow progress through their streets, the museum is offering free admission for the first two weeks of the exhibition.
