HONOLULU, Hawaii - Holiday travelers who need a rental car in Hawaii to get home for Christmas will find securing one an expensive proposition. According to a new survey, rental car rates have risen strongly in Honolulu for the holidays, and they have exploded in Kauai and Maui.
The survey specifically examined the car rental rates of 30 popular U.S. destinations over the Christmas period spanning December 23–27. When the results were tabulated, Hawaii took three of the top four spots. family beach vacation packages In Honolulu, renters will have to spend $127 per rental day for the most affordable car. That represents an increase of 116% compared to regular rates. family beach vacation packages However, that price hike seems moderate compared to the rental rates on two other Hawaiian Islands.
In Kahului, on the island of Maui, for example, holiday car renters will have to spend $339 per rental day, making it the most expensive locale in the United States. Only slightly cheaper are rates in Lihue, on the island of Kauai. There the most affordable car at the moment will cost renters $272 daily. The following table shows the 10 destinations with the highest car rental rates during the Christmas timeframe, along with a comparison to regular prices. The rates shown reflect the average daily rate for the cheapest available car for the period spanning December 23 through December 27. Regular rates reflect the average rental car rates for January.
