There he meets his mother s sister, Aunt Augusta, for the first time since his baptism some 50 years

They say it s the journey, not the destination, that counts; this has never been truer than with Graham Greene s Travels with my Aunt . While the eventual outcome of the story is obvious to the reader from the start, Greene weaves a1 discount hotel reservations a tale of wanderlust, loyalty and self-discovery that kept me hooked until the final page and beyond.
Henry Pulling has taken early retirement from his job as a bank manager a1 discount hotel reservations and, with no friends or family to speak of, is set to see out his days with nothing but his prize-winning dahlias to occupy his time. He is therefore feeling agreeably excited by the prospect of the only event in his social calendar: his mother s funeral. Henry Pulling, we discover, is not a man of great sentimentality.
a1 discount hotel reservations There he meets his mother s sister, Aunt Augusta, for the first time since his baptism some 50 years earlier. The devilish septuagenarian leads a peripatetic lifestyle that would make Michael Palin look like a homebody, and is about to turn Henry s world upside down forever. Cross-garden fence exchanges with The Major are soon replaced by adventures with hippies, geriatric lotharios and even war criminals.
But it is not a sudden a1 discount hotel reservations transformation. It s the subtlety of Henry s awakening to the world, to the potential of a life well lived, that I enjoyed. As Greene gradually unveils the decades and escapades that chart Aunt Augusta s life, the previously indistinct and forgettable Henry begins to unfurl and take shape before our eyes.
There is no need for a reveal at the end of the book, just a confirmation of what we already know to be true – and the tacit acknowledgement from Henry that the penny had dropped early on for him too. He just needed some time to come to terms with it and that, for me, is why it s the journey, not the destination, which makes this novel a classic.
