Something amazing is going to happen tomorrow. The almost 200 employees of the Doubletree Hotel on Broad Street in Center City are going to have a vote on whether or not to join the United Steel Workers of America.
The workers at the hotel though, who still did not have decent wages or benefits, were still very much in need of a union. So they decided to keep working to get one. They approached the Steel Workers and a partnership was made.
The voting starts at 6 AM tomorrow and Steelworkers members shilo inn hilltop and allies will be outside the hotel encouraging Doubletree employees to vote to join the union. It only takes 50% + 1 to win and over a month ago, 109 employees pledged their support.
Since then, hotel bosses have been doing everything shilo inn hilltop they can to bust this nascent union. They have raised wages among select employees, purchased new uniforms for others, and called mandatory meetings for all employees to talk about how great their workplace is, and how bad a union would make things.
As wonderful as SEIU and other progressive leaders in the labor movement are for their dedication to building union density (and thus improving the lives of workers nationwide), you have to admire the moxy and spirit of the Doubletree Hotel workers on Broad Street who, without the urging of anything but their own convictions, shilo inn hilltop are building union power.
If the argument for local trickle-down economics is that bringing new businesses (like the hotels shilo inn hilltop and theatres that line Ed rendell's Avenue of the Arts), brings jobs to the city, then it is only logical that the people who work those jobs should be paid well for the work they do.
