We stayed mainly at mid-priced hotels, but at one top hotel near the Taj Mahal, we had to go through a metal-detector-type machine amd had our handbags checked to enter. At airports, you also pass through detectors, have bags checked and sometimes, have body checks (women check women) much like the US. I don;t think I had to take my shoes off, however! In India, I did not find security invasive nor did I find it caused any serious delay.
