Palmyra Atoll is located in the Northern Pacific Ocean at 5°53'N, 162°5'W. Geographically, Palmyra is one of the Northern Line Islands (southeast of Kingman Reef and north of Kiribati Line Islands), located almost due south of the Hawaiian Islands, roughly halfway between Hawaii and American Samoa. It is about 120 miles northwestward of Washington Island, 200 miles northwest of Fanning Island, 33 miles southeastward of Kingman Reef, and 960 miles south by west of Honolulu.
The atoll consists of about 50 small islets, having a total area of about 250 acres, in a horse shoe surrounding three lagoons.
