July 20, 2012 The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is opening a Preliminary Evaluation regarding a possible unintended-acceleration defect affecting 730,000 Ford Escapes and Mazda Tributes. The problem is that some cruise control cables may have been damaged during a repair for an unrelated defect. The CAS also filed a petition to have the NHTSA investigate Jeep fires associated with the 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The NHTSA is now investigating serious rear-impact fuel-fed fires with the Jeep Grand Cherokee , Cherokee , and Liberty .
